RUNNER
Hi everyone, A couple of days ago I received an av mod from vintagegamingandmore.com for my heavy sixer. At this stage I have to say that my skills at electronics or soldering are pretty low having only soldered a couple of things in the past and owning just a soldering iron an a small helping hand. I decided to do this myself because I read it was pretty simple and everyone with low close-to-none skills could perform this task with no problem. Thing is that when I opened my heavy sixer shell I realised that my motherboard didn't match the ususal heavy sixers probably because mine is one of the first models, so instead of having 5 pins for the rf unit it only had 3 (look at pic). I read somewhere here that the color sequence replacing the rf was the same for this board, only ignoring the empty holes so I got hands at work and soldered everything as explained on the instructions. After finishing I hooked it up to the tv and realised there was no sound! Image is very good, in fact, better than I expected with almost no ghosting but what have I done wrong? There're 4 cables that go in the new av board black-ground, blue-video, yellow-audio and red 5v. The way out consists of 3 cables black-ground, red-audio and blue-video. The only thing I'm sure about is that blue is good both in and out. Yellow has also been soldered on the switch board, where stated but I'm doubting that in black and red are good or would have to be reversed. I don't want to touch anything anyway not without advice just in case... What do u think?
+RichG1972
You have to be careful too as well because when some people sell a LIGHT sixer they mistakenly call it a HEAVY sixer due to the same heavy shield being present:http://www.retrogamescollector.com/how-to-tell-an-atari-cx2600-heavy-sixer-from-a-light-sixer/
RUNNER
Yep I know. Mine is a heavy
RUNNER
Hope you finish rebuilding your collection Rich BTW. Same thing has happened to me. Just missing ten carts at the moment from the ones I already had.
Shawn
You have to be careful too as well because when some people sell a LIGHT sixer they mistakenly call it a HEAVY sixer due to the same heavy shield being present: No, no they don't. Keatah
Worst mod ever. They used to tell you to break the RF modulator in half. And cutting out parts instead of properly desoldering them. And people buy this crap?
+RichG1972
No, no they don't. Allow me to clarify, I meant the thick metal casing inside that holds the motherboard, I am pretty sure both the heavy and light sixers have this, the switchboards though are markedly different, the heavy has more parts on it and an entirely different connection cable
RUNNER
Would make sense that the audio connection (yellow cable) was soldered on the wrong place but it's exactly where the instructions said (that werefor a light sixer btw although switchboards look identical)
RUNNER
Sorry the mainboards look identical, where the audio is, not the switchboards, I mistook.
RUNNER
Sorted out! Used a voltimeter and found out the audio-yellow cable was cut off inside. I guess it was me when reclosing the bottom of the metal shield as the edge was coincident with the broken part. I soldered it back together and works fine.
