You probably should pick up a VR system now (video)

Recommended Posts

The opening line says it all, "We've been told". I don't really care what the tech industry says anymore. They tell you this, they tell you that, just so long as you buy into whatever it is they're selling. They keep tellin' but I ain't buy'n.

VR in the consumer sphere is (and always has been) a solution in search of a problem. The total opposite of, let's say, microprocessor speed advancements or storage density increases. Those two products don't have the glamour and glory surrounding them like sheeples with funky headgear.

Any good game or simulation will draw you into it regardless of the display technology (vr or 2d lcd). Just don't like all that crap on my head that excludes the real world 100%.

Spacecadet, I'm not watching the video, but my immediate response is a spit-take HA HA NO.

It's MARCH 2017

Playstation VR just came out in October 2016

We are a year away from the Oculus Rift from March 2016

and the HTC Vive from April 2016

It's too early for price drops.

The inevitable 2nd generation, which is going to be BETTER and CHEAPER, is months away.

I say to you that this is the WORST POSSIBLE TIME to get into VR. We are literally at the peak of inflated expectations. There is a lot of software but no killer app. Hardware is at the ideal spot to spend the most amount of money for the least amount of capabilities. This is like buying the iPhone (1) in June 2007 for $499 with 4GB of storage, a 2 megapixel camera, and EDGE networking.

I like technology, I sometimes like to be on the leading edge, and maybe you say some stuff in the video that is less laughable, but there's no way you'd convince me that I should probably pick up a VR system now.

I talk about guys like you in the video, you should watch it :)

I confess I don't really understand this obsession people have with price and constantly waiting for that to drop. Yeah, you can buy a system in the future when it's cheaper; you always can. I could have waited 30 years before getting my first game console, which is when I did buy my first Atari 2600 for $13, and a bunch of games for a buck a piece. That doesn't mean anyone who bought that system 30 years prior at full price is a sucker. They've been able to play it a lot longer than I have. I'm jealous of that; I certainly don't feel superior for it just because I spent less. Life is about experiencing things, it's not a contest to see who can save the most money.

(Obviously I understand not everybody has the money to begin with, and I talk about that in the video too, but we're on a video game forum. We wouldn't be here if we didn't have disposable cash to buy stuff no one needs.)

For me,

Value = Price/Desire

I care so little about VR, especially in its nascent, corded state, that there's no way I'd pay $400 and up just for the privilege of dorking around with it. I bought a $25 Viewmaster Google Cardboard gadget last year, and that felt like quite enough for me. I'll send it to anyone who is interested if you cover my shipping charges.

You know how some people just don't play or care about video games? Same thing here for me and VR.

I respect that Sony was surprised that they already sold a million VR units, in glad that people who dig it are being served, but I don't see myself joining their number anytime soon, if ever.

And with that I will stop pissing in the VR soup. Is anyone planning on getting VR at this stage of the game?

/stands up and coughs nervously....

I bought my PSVR at launch and am still loving it. Nothing prepared me for the depth and scale of the experience and also the immersion where it does trick you sometimes into thinking you are actually somewhere you physically aren't.

The horror games, i never expected to feel the level of vulnerability that I did playing these, one day i'll get brave enough to buy and play the full game of Res Evil in VR.

Sure there are a lot of "experiences" and some real naff games, but some are great too, the ones i've been enjoying most are Batman VR, Eve Valkyrie, Battlezone, Job Simulator, VR Worlds, even a simple Dungeon Crawler like Crystal Rift is made more fun by "being there", oh and of course Star Wars Battlefront X-wing VR.

/sits again.

You assume too much on that context alone. Anyone here could easily have held onto their stuff for 30 years. Anyone also could just like to talk about the old days or are in a learning phase and straight up use emulation on PC, tablet, phone, or some pi box as well which has no real cost of entry or minimal at best. VR at this rate is early and expensive. If you want to poo poo it off as people being tight wads and cheap, that's your problem, doesn't make you right in the least bit. It's not always good to get in on the ground floor with tech, especially stuff that to anyone with some common sense can still see has rough edges and room to mature and with maturity the price of said tech drops. Why buy something now say for $500 which can (this is made up) do a 720p 3D image, or wait a year, pay $50 less or even the same and have twice the visual output? You will be stuck with old junk and have to double invest to keep up, but I guess you have those deep pockets right? You're coming off as one of those technophile types with more money than common sense who gets confused why others don't go right along with it.

Care to explain?

Is it something I really need if I actually already have a job? I am really interested into knowing if we already peaked 3D VR experience and we went straight back to simulating boredom in real world into VR ('cause nothing beats being a virtual janitor for a day).

It's half a joke half not, don't know a "Job Simulator" is, hopefully you don;t have to do internship first, then interview, then play the office politics .... you know like a real job.

It's just a simple "small game" where you perform simple tasks to order, in different scenarios. A little light hearted escapism in VR from the daily grind of our real jobs, with no interviews, no politics and a good entry point for those unfamiliar with VR..

I'd like to have one for PC racing games but can't bring myself to actually buy one, mainly due to my concern for comfort issues, especially at the current price point. I'd rather have someone else be the early adopter who helps them work out the bugs.

I am definitely interested in VR. My family has the Google Daydream and Samsung Gear VR headsets and both of those are pretty neat. I prefer the Google version a bit more because it has a separate controller vs a touchpad on the headset, but the Samsung does fit a bit better.

I want to see if Xbox Scorpio will have any VR capabilities before I decide on a higher end headset. The PlayStation offering looks good and I have a PS4, but most of my gaming is done on the XB1 so I am on hold for a bit. I am hoping that the Occulus Rift or Vive will work with the Xbox Scorpio.

I played the PS4 VR system, it held promise but has a ways to go to get me to bite.

I wouldn't purchase it as is, unless it was like $199.

If they reduced the size and made it wireless I'd buy into it. It kind of reminds me of the Kinect (or the Wii), very fun for a bit, but hardly essential.

Wait, how much are you paying for Facebook?

Nothing, because I deleted it permanently 4 years ago, as well as instagram, and have resolved never to patronize another product or service of theirs.

Zuckerburg is a douchebag of epic proportions and I prefer not to be a part of his plans for global dominations.
