Tangentg
So I tried out KoalaPaint (for the Atari 8-bit computers) today, and it seems like the entire picture could only have 4 colours at a given time? (unless you're doing rainbow mode) Cause when I tried to change the colour on the palette thing then the same colour on the picture also changes. Also, i haven't figured out how to make multiple pictures yet (it's probably in the manual but I haven't gotten round to reading it fully yet). Unsure if you could do an extra 4 colours in a second pic and the "copy" it to another picture, creating up to 8 colours, though I doubt it, looking at some Koala art. doctorclu
Wow Koala! I used to download so many pictures on the local BBS. Actually drew a Hal Jordan/Green Lantern picture once. Of course, I was doing this on a hacked version of the Koala program and it was hacked to use a joystick.
+bcombee
I assume KoalaPaint was using graphics mode 7 (or 7.5) which only support four colors. The only modes that had >4 color at a time support (without display list interrupts) were the GITA modes (9, 10, 11) that supported 16 colors or 16 shade of one color, or 10 separate colors.
kiwilove
It is only 4 colours - but I think there are programs around, in which you can load in a picture that you created - and you can add extra colour(s) to them - but in horizontal bands as such - via DLI (Display List Interrupts). Fun With Artist is a complete program - that can add extra colours via this method - and has a useful feature, called block copy. bfollett
Rambrandt comes to mind as another paint program that will use interrupts for extra colors. Bob

That's how Atari graphics work, basically. If you want more colors, try out Rambrandt. I believe it can use a Koalapad, but it allows you to insert DLIs into your picture which will allow you to use more colors. I think you can also paint in the more colorful (but wide pixel) GTIA modes with Rambrandt if memory serves. Tangentg
I'll check Rambrandt out. Thanks for the info. By the way, I saw an undo function "oops" on the C64 version. It's not present in the Atari version, I guess. Edited March 21, 2017 by Tangentg

If memory serves, to trigger an interrupt in Rambrandt you position your cursor on a line and press the I key, you can then change one of the colors from that line on down through the rest of the screen, or until it hits another interrupt that changes it. I also think Rambrandt only allows one color change per line with interrupts. It would be nice if let us swap out the entire palette.
