Lego City Undercover

Did anyone ever pick this up on the Switch (or the other guys even?)

I ended up with it early this month for a ridiculous deal or I wouldn't have it as of yet. I'm quite surprised at the quality. The general load time now and again to get the full city loaded up sucks, but outside of that not seeing too much to fault it. I can't seem to figure out how to pull up the map in general if that's even possible which is a bit annoying but I'm going ok with it. I just finished the jail area and now onto the mine. There's so much to do it's actually quite enjoyable and far less annoying and stressful to bother with than those crappy played out to death GTA games and most of their clones. It is kind of an added bit of amusing fun running your car through stuff watching the pieces go flying from little lamp posts and benches to larger cars and so on. I can see how they put some good thought into this game so it would appeal to any age. I think it probably would be too daunting for a 5 year old, but then again, they'd probably just have fun running around and doing random stuff as boredom wouldn't set in so easily.

I hadn't touched the game in 10 days, been in a funk about gaming and other junk in general kind of tired. Fired it up on a whim a few hours ago and ran my battery almost to death in handheld mode so I parked it. I need to get myself over my years long gaming mental slump and just DO it, not think about it then lose track of time as it's fun.

I did. I don't see the problem with the load times. From what was being said in the other thread about the Wii U version I assumed it was an almost game breaking amount of loading but it turns out it is something I wouldn't even think of or notice as a problem if it wasn't ever brought up. I'm liking the game. I'll be playing it today while my wife is in her doctor's appointment.

It's a tad annoying but it's only really when you drop back out to the full world map, and if you just get one big dump like that while the others are smaller it's really not an issue. I'm thinking impatient millennials and whiny media looking for a story brewed up more hate than was deserved on the loads. It's not like they're playstation 1/2 bad as quite a few games just did an eternal sit and spin with a boring load bar.

I'm struggling to see even the tad annoying part. It only loads in places you would expect like starting a mission and while doing so it seems that by the time I read the tip or joke at the bottom then spin and zoom on the LEGO object a few times to see how it is put together it is already loaded. I was expecting it to be something interrupting gameplay like driving down the street and then it goes to a long loading screen when you make a turn or something like that but it is nothing like that. If this is a negative that should be a strike against a review and/or a sign of a lazy port then every game that has any loading at all should get a strike against it because this is very minimal loading at times you would expect. I wouldn't even notice it was an issue if it wasn't pointed out to me and even after it has been pointed out to me I still can't see how it is an issue. I'm past the mission where you steal the green jewel from the bank and have yet to see anything that indicates that this isn't a well made game.

The annoyance is the overall time involved in loading the world. It just seems excessively long compared to even far larger open areas (Zelda BOTW) that load in quite a bit less time. Also when factoring in you're not reading off a spinning disc and buffering that read then the game, it's just annoying a bit. At least you can play with the 3D lego model on screen while you wait though. The long load time just feels like 2x speed era CD wait screens. I'm coming off of open world Zelda to open world Lego and it just feels excessive. I never read a single review on the game but I had heard the whining about loading screens everywhere, which I haven't noticed being everywhere, just the one huge slow load when the full world is buffered. Either way it's a very well made game with lots of crazy things you can do with the Lego you find. It's cool you can just build or break stuff and do the story or not with it as it feels a lot less just jumbled and sloppy than played out GTA.

I really want this game, but I've been put off by previous Lego games that seem very glitchy. I could almost deal with bad load times if I can be sure this game doesn't error out, crash, or have inexplicably terrible controls.

I haven't had problems with it crashing or throwing me through walls, or cameras getting me blind or stuck if that's what you're talking about. The controls seem fine too. They feel more GTA3 style than the wooden kind of backasswards controls that Lego Indy, Star Wars, Potter, etc type games have had. There was some level of compromise needed I think to make a fully flowing super world vs just a 2D/3D platformer in small lego blocked off areas that load one after another.

I only took the risk as (my guess) some thief stole a copy, turned it into Half Price Books, and they went and sold it for 1/2 price ($30) and I had a discount which dropped it down to $23 so I got it for under 40% of retail pricing so it was worth the risk. Trust me I felt the same which is why I didn't buy Lego Indy 2 or any other Lego Star Wars games after the complete saga one as it got grating.
