CollectorVision Phoenix Game Console

... on another note .... given the CV, MSX and SMS use a BIOS is the user supposed to bring his own?

SW copyrights last so long that I doubt anyone can release anything with a BIOS in it in my lifetime without finding a way to get a license for the BIOS in question.

For MSX there's C-BIOS that may do in most (but not all) cases due to its BSD-clause, I am not aware of anything like that for CV and/or SMS.

Granted very many games may work without any BIOS at all, still.

Did I miss anything?

The sg1000 on the other hand is BIOS-less so no issues about it (as any HW patent have long expired), it can work right out of the box.

[i believe the BIOS-less nature of NES and SNES is what allowed Analogue to easily and legally ship the Nt Mini and Super Nt, and could allow a MegaDrive based release, obviously non TMSS but that is fine ;-) , that also matches all the FamiClone, NES/SNES/MD all in one clones we've seen in the last decade or so, funny as no-one attempted yet a PCE/TG16]

My understanding is the coleco vision bios is easily reverse engineered and replicated without violating copyright. Not sure about msx or sms, but based on some of the homebrew cartridges here copyright is not an issue.

In theory, it would be quiet easy , to create a new BIOS compatible for the colecovision. But the issue is that some games (to not say almost all) performs call to BIOS at non official/documented location. So if you use a modified BIOS , these call won't work as the game won't find the expected code and the game behaviors is affected.

So if you create a new bios you will hardly have a 100% compatibility with the original one.

Like the standalone Coleco ADAM only being 99% compatible and not working with 2 ColecoVision cartridges (Defender and Super Cobra). However the advantage of the CollectorVision game system is that if it is only 98% or 99% compatible with ColecoVision games on release date, with a firmware update installed to the SD wafer card slot the CollectorVision game system can be made 100% compatible with all ColecoVision game cartridges. Any software problems can be fixed with firmware updates that are downloaded from the CollectorVision website and placed on a SD wafer card.

Our system is ENTIRELY open source, so anyone is completely free to add ANY features /enhancements to it, we all feel like we should not impose you a closed environment or any exclusive features and charge you more money for it. Our system is a love letter to the original Colecovision system and will plays all your regular ColecoVision cartridges, ....oh, and even more! ;)

I thought a official list price had not been announced yet. The $200 and under price is just a theory at this point from what I understand. The original ColecoVision was priced at $199.99 back in August of 1982, and this CollectorVision system does much more. I would be willing to pay $300+ for more features and higher quality.

Our system is now going to support the SGM, in a legal way
We never intented to do it the wrong way anyways

Of course both Eduardo and I were ''fighting'' over arguments etc.. but this has never been personal. At least for me.
I appreciate what Eduardo (and all others btw) did for the community and I would be a complete fool thinking otherwise.
Now, I admit that I did go a little too far last week, wich is a good reminder for me; ''just deal on private message only''
So my appologies to EVERYONE of you here.

Now I need to resume some of our projects

Cheers

Yeah , so how is that paddle controller coming along ?

The paddle controller prototype is done since last March and it works prefectly! :)

We just need to find the time to actually manufacture it

We're probably going to do a pre-order so we can knows ''exactly'' how many units we need to manufacture

"price point" was requested, not official price:

I am glad to hear that the CollectorVision game system well now fully support the Super Game Module. People well be happy with this and everyone that makes games that use the SGM well now sale more game cartridges (and perhaps games on low cost SD wafer media also since there is a built in Wafer Drive in the system to go along with the Super Game Module).

If I remember correctly , you won't be able to plug an sgm into their console .

That is true since there is no standard Coleco expansion slot for expansion #1, #3 or OPCODE SGM. But the ColletorVision system well have a faster and more modern expansion slot. Plus the SGM well be emulated in software. If this system every ends up emulating a Coleco ADAM computer using a PS/2 keyboard and using the SD slot for 1.44MB 3.5 inch floppy images, I well then most likely purchase several systems.

Incorrect.

The SGM will be implemented in the FPGA.

FPGA programming has to do with normal CPU based programming as much as 3D printing has to do with classic paper printing .... they use some of the same terminology and they have some shared concepts but the similarity is really just skin deep.

There is no General Instruments AY-3-8910 sound chip built into the FPGA. However with software code one can configure the FPGA logic arrays to function just like the AY-3-8910.

I'm glad to hear this news. I'm grateful to you, Eduardo, Luc, and all the others that make awesome products for the coleco. As I said before I will be buying your new system as well as Eduardo's system and probably the others that are made as well. You can't have too many coleco systems can you?

Quick question about your system, can it also have an f-18a mode as well? It would be cool to have that added benefit. Thanks again for everything you do for the scene.
