It is something I have been contemplating making for some time. I am thinking of making overlays but different. My thought is to cut out holes for the buttons to stick through. I think that design personally makes more sense then the current over button set-up.

Thoughts?

Let's see a mock up. This is something I may like for my game Fast Food 64, as it will have several number key functions. I think this is good idea seeing how you have to have the overlays kind of bubbled in order to fit properly. this could be a great thing for homebrews.. As for pre-existing Jaguar titles, I guess you would just need to resize the icons and have them above each number key. I'm interested to see how one of these would look!

Buttons through is awesome sounding but i wonder how much image will show then?

Well you would lose some image but if you really look at the controller the buttons are much smaller than the bubbles on the layouts. I will make a rough template w/no art on it so you can see what area could be used for images. You could easily offset the buttons images to be next to the text as well since there is a lot of unused space on most jag layouts.

Great idea! I am on board as long as price is fair. I would like a whole set for all the games the NEED an overlay. No sense in having one for games that do not use them.

Any idea what a full set would run and if you will do the overlays for homebrews, etc?

I currently make Jag overlays with plastic over the buttons only because it allows for more image to be printed on them. The drawback is I'm unable to make the bubbles over the buttons so my overlays tend to be flat.

I do like your idea of holes over each button since that would allow people to "feel" the button, but you will loose some of your printing area. I guess its a good/bad thing and in the end it is all about what is more desirable (Feeling the buttons or the pretty print area). I went with over the buttons, but I can see going the other way as well.

This is a great idea. Like the thought of having holes in the overlay and customizing the graphics to work around the new concept.

I'd be in for a whole set-even for games that don't use the key pad. Could have them just for aesthetics.

Here is a rough cut-out. I would obviously clean it up a bit and make the circles around buttons a bit tighter, which would give more print area but this is a good idea of what I am planning.

Looks great, alot more space around them than i thought. I'm onboard with this.

What would a whole set consist of. I also need to find a suitable material. As far as homebrews you better check and make sure I will not get crucified first.

I do plan on making these. I have requested a sample material to play with. I am going to keep searching as well for other suitable materials. I really want these to be plastic so it is going to take me a few weeks before I have a definite answer on material. There is no point in proceeding if I have to half ass it lol.

I actually think the diameter around the buttons is okay as is. If they are too close to the buttons, then the buttons might have a tendency to get caught or stuck under the overlay when pressed. It would also make putting the overlays on and off much easier if the holes around the buttons are larger. If you make them much smaller around the button, then you run the risk of the overlays being a pain in the neck to take on and off.

I don't think there are any homebrew authors who would care one way or another about making overlays for their games.

Yup, unless you do shady things like claim that was a *RARE!!!!* limited-edition bonus that came with the game, or stuff like that, I don't think anyone would mind.

I don't do stuff like that. I can listed the number of times I listed an item and used the word "rare" in the title on 1 hand if I even used it at all. My take on "wasting" a keyword on something like rare is just that a waste. If an item is rare your "target" audience already knows this and they don't need to be told the obvious. The majority of people who use rare are not selling anything rare at all.

As far as this goes, I am still having a hard time finding a material that I wanted to use. I know I can use a photo paper and laminate both sides but I really want a plastic. I had contacted a company like 3-4 days ago and make a log story short he tried to feed me some bs on how my printer would melt their paper because I don't use a $10,000 UV drying printer and run a fortunate 500 business. I told the guy, if you don't want to sell to me just say so.

I am looking for a white plastic that is ink jet printable using dye based ink, just in case anyone wants to try their luck. As far as the holes go, I did 2 more revisions, the 2nd was better and the 3rd was too tight. When I make them they will have plenty of room to go on and off easily but I wants maximum print area as well.

As far as image to overlay placement, I think that depends more so on the game. For some games having a separate image for each button makes sense but other maybe just a design would be better suited if the game doesn't actually use the buttons.
