New keyboard membranes

...opening up a computer and it's keyboard to check out what the old one looks like.

Won't you need to do this anyway in order to establish which Mylar you need to purchase? There were only two Mylar variants used in the XE range (and only one - dual layer - in the XEGS), and the only way to tell for sure is to remove the keyboard and see if it has plastic protrusions coming through the back plate under the console keys (which the single-layer Mitsumi keyboards do not have).

Guys

It's so easy to put the extra text on the mylar. Why not just have the text? Why are you fighting me on this? If you don't need, want or like the text, maybe others do. Compared to the rest of the work of creating the mylars, it's peanuts.

Sincerely

Mathy

Well that and when the metal hides that hint on some, you can see the layers right where the ribbon comes out on some. Either way you have no choice but to give it a look!

Which dual layer Mylar keyboards don't have the plastic protrusions at the back that I'm talking about? I've never seen any in a decade which didn't have the characteristics I described. Those which don't are Mitsumis.

Original mylars were never intended to be sold to users, they were put in at the factory.

Since the original Mylars lack any kind of labelling, and you appear unable to tell one from the other by sight, can I ask how you know which replacement to order in the first place?

where you referring to the mylar protruding, the upper key guide tubes protruding... there a number of protrusions going on..

I suspect the protruding key guides... are the clue you make. While you repair a boatload of this stuff, some folks are like hey there's plastic sticking out here there and there. But I know what you mean.

My intention was not to present a riddle, but yes: the key guides. I did say 'under the console' keys. I figured minds sufficiently inquisitive to actually replace the Mylar might have been able to spot the difference, but maybe labels on the Mylars are required after all. Honestly: I'm trying to point out that the two different models of keyboard are clearly identifiable without even taking them apart (since I cannot for the life of me understand why anyone needs labels on the blasted Mylars), and preferably doing so without putting the phone down and running upstairs to take photos, etc. I begin to see why labels are needed... Perhaps if Atari had put arrows next to the key guides as well. Holy Christ.

I am a pylon repairman don't let the Sleestak interfere with my work! If they remove the crystal, the keyboard may never function correctly. This could lead to a solar catastrophe !!

Of course using the part number etched on the mylars would cover it all.

per se a single sided mylar has

MITSUMI 56-3217A

or maybe the backing plate sticker..

MITSUMI logo on the sticker that says

CO70015

w/ some nice code like

850122

all that kind of crazy stuff.... on the metal backing plate.

You never know.....

I'm just running it down, I've dealt with just such things... it all helps. Even with all the information and pictures you just know the wrong one gets ordered somehow someway by someone... :)

it's okay, my sarcasm never shows easily :)

oh but it gets Even better! My Sleestak LotL Repairman tie-in is real... ;)

7:11 is about where our repairman arrives. But you have to promise to watch the opening up til the title and jingle finish ;)

You don't want to miss the beginning part where the Sleestak mess up the Pylon ... best to just sit back with your corn flakes, crisps, or crazy loops and watch the hole thing... w00t!

Guys, it seems that Atari 800 (not XL) with mylar is very rare. I have now four 800 here, all have mechanical keyboard... Could you check your versions? I do not know if it is smart to order a big batch of such mylars...

Next question: what is the price of 1200XL mylar at Best Electronics? Are they NOS, or fresh production? Does anyone have a photo of such mylar?

might have been 4 maybe 5 or so years ago, I paid $10.00 for XE mylars.... and he wanted $20.00 for some other one. I don't remember if it was Best or B&C... it was a text based list I picked it from in any event. They basically were on sale trying to clear some out. So not always have been. Perhaps you gotta check in on them more often. Nothing changes on their list until sometime it does.

*edit* might have been longer now that I think about it... in any event it was 10.00 for what I needed, 19.99 for the one I didn't need... and both Bravo Sierra and one or the other of (BEST or B&C) had it at the same price but said special. I needed more than what Bravo Sierra had in the way of hardware so I ordered it all in one place.

A year or so ago Best was asking $80 for the 1200XL mylars. I passed on that. However six months later they were $40+shipping so I got one. They are quite new. They did a run last year IIRC.

now that's kind of how it was for the XE mylar, out of the clear blue.. half price...

You have a HiTek or Stackpole keyboard.

The Mitsumi's are the good ones that all professional typers demand.

Please order MANY mylars. There are MANY 800 owners interested in this.

Sorry, but both of my 800's are mechanical. Also, I have ordered two 1200XL mylar's from Best this year and they both worked perfectly.
