Car wars and other single chip boards

Back when i got my FR99 I decided to sacrifice a game cart to use for the FR99.
I chose Car wars.

I noticed the board only had one chip on it.

What is that chip and can it be replaced by an eprom?

say i wanted to put a socket i the chip's place and use it like a a programmable board, so I can swap chips in the socket and use the board for so much more?

I believe that chip is a GROM, which cannot be replaced by an EPROM (ROM). You probably already know this, but GROMs contain only GPL code and ROMs, only ALC.

Are all single GROM based boards equal?

The reason I am interested in this:

I don't want to have to collect carts to cannibalize them.
If I remove the grom from car wars and replace with a socket, then if I have other single grom carts that are equal, i could remove their groms and use them in the socketed cart when ever i wanted. That could potentially free up some carts for me to use.

I want one cart to improve my existing FR99 modded case, and possibly use another cart for the nanopeb case and maybe even a third for my ram side expansion. As much as I love the 3D printed cases, they are a bit pricey for me when there are modding possibilities.
I'm tempted to use cassette cases for some of these as I've seen them used before (for the side cart 23k). Just thinking at the moment. I was tempted to make something out of wood using thin paneling or something when carts crossed my mind.

Maybe I can get a 3D printer later this year, we'll see. Then no worries and I can make so much more useful stuff as well.

me, I'd just get one ubergrom board and load grom files from disk into it's flash memory using the ubergrom loading tool easier and no hacking/recasing/desoldering required
