Was there ever a version that had a white ball? No blue balls! I seem to very vaguely remember one that did.

No, that's not possible as the ball graphic takes on the color of the playfield. Missiles weren't used because they don't have VDEL registers, and therefore would have choppy motion compared to the ball.

Why would the lack of VDEL make the motion choppy? Missiles still have the horizontal motion registers.  Or am I misunderstanding what you mean?

Vertical delay, that is, handling smooth one pixel vertical motion, in a two-line kernel.
