Wico keypad 5200?

Not mine just found this. But its a little steep since its not working. I already have a the stick on the right. Just never had a keypad. They are so rare. Even if it was better price keypad does not respond at all despite have all internal parts.

 

So what could be wrong? And if it was the cable or something like that are those soldered on and not replaceable?

Came across this post and it inspired me to check the keypad unit out a little more. Yes, the auction is indeed mine. So i opened up the keypad and cleaned it and numbers 1-9 are now working. The *, #, and 0 do not work. Start, Pause, and Reset now work. I am going to resolder the contacts on the ribbon connector as well as the buttons since they seem loose. Will let you know later tomorrow if i indeed have it completely working. I used to fix this crap all the time but my motivation to do so has waned over these many years. So basically this auction was me being lazy and welcoming someone else to take a crack at fixing it.

I see the update thannks. So 1,4,7,0,#,* still do not work? Its not fixable? If not then that is too much for me sorry.

Not sure if it is fixable. Yes, those are the buttons that do not work. I had 1, 4, and 7 working at one point but they were not reliable. Not sure what is going on with the last row. Never got those buttons to function. No need to apologize, my post was informational, not promotional.

I've had two of these over the years. Both suffered from non resonsive keys. Turned out that at least on one of them the cable itself was the issue. I had a junker 5200 controller so I pulled its cable and checked all the wires. Everything seemed good, so I use it to change out the wire on the Wico keypad. That keypad works 100% now. Interesting, the keypad did have one extra wire that was missing from the original 5200 cable I used. It might have been the +5 wire, but I couldn't see a reason for that to exist. And I confirmed the keypad works just fine with my wico controllers, so not really sure what the +5 line was there for?

 

Just a thought as the actual keypad on those is pretty robust but the wiring in the cable is another story. Very thin...

Hey all - I too just stumbled on this. If anyone wants an update, this keypad has found its way to me. Can't remember what price Tombstone and I came to, but I was more than satisfied. The problem itself was with the wires {the parts inside the box seem about as solid as one gets for the era}. One other thing I do remember about the inside of the box is thinking that, if you're gonna start popping Start/Pause/Reset buttons off, you better be prepared for what you are getting into. It was everything a nube like me could do to get those buttons back together without having them stuck or otherwise non-functioning. Besides, I suspect it will be rare that they are ever the problem with the functionality of these things. Anyway, after destroying the original cable/harness, I tested the keypad out with a known to be working cable. And, voila. All worked great. Well, It's since been shoved to a project box, but I've just recently gotten a multimeter. So, it should be back in action soon. Relatedly, I had another one that only had one bad wire. So, I just used the original cable and reconnected just the end piece of the harness with no extension from the keypad. I kind of like having it free of the cable for storage, etc.

After reading back through some of the other posts again, I think it is safe to say that if someone is having problems with their keypad, the wires/cable may be a good place to start the troubleshooting.

That is was I was alluding to when I first replied to this thread...hehe.

 

Honestly I've had to replace probably a half dozen 5200 cable harnesses between the two Wico keypads and 5200 controllers. Those wires are just so thin and I guess with age they just break internally within the insulation.

Yeah, somehow between reading your post and re-writing the parts you had already discussed I forgot it had already been said. Tried to cover my tracks a little with the 2nd post. The brains not as sharp as it once was.
