boxpressed
My son is really into Terraria right now, and I know almost nothing about these crafting games. He plays it on his Kindle Fire. I'd like to get him some guidebooks for the game, but I didn't know if there are different versions of the game for mobile devices vs. consoles (like Minecraft). Has anyone played both the mobile and console versions of Terraria? Is there a difference that would make a guidebook useless for the mobile version? Thanks for any help. Tanooki
I've played it on ios, android and GOG(PC) and they're the same. All they do to really adapt it is have some on screen touch controls for the button/pad-less mobile devices. They don't really go about changing all sorts of gameplay elements and the rest, let alone the primary gameplay mechanics so it is intact. Any core parts you should have no worries about until at least when they do yet another major overhaul that may make things look/play notably different. Video
Basically the same game. That's one nice thing about it. Minecraft is a bit different, but mostly minor from my experience, especially since recent updates.
Tanooki
I have to agree with that. I own both and have for years, but Terraria has got like 90% of the play time between the two. I find minecraft just too random and boring for the most part. I've made multiple random worlds and rarely if ever have I found better minerals and never the red dust to make the important things in the world so I get bored and stop. Terraria is better balanced by design and just feels more encouraging to keep digging and crafting on that one.
Video
I think part of what makes Terraria great is your stuff never breaks. No filling your inventory with pickaxes and going on a supply run. You just have one of your tools, leaving your menus open for more stuff, till you find better materials for better tools. What I don't like about it is this image is determined by your screen resolution. I got a new TV, finally upgraded to 1080p, and stopped playing this game due to my newfound ability (or lack there of) to actually see it. no ability to adjust resolution as near as I can find. As to redstone dust, you can find it in chests, and some structures. But the easy way is to mine it. Its layer 0-15 I believe. One block will usually give you 4 dust. Fortune is your friend too, netting you up to 16 for each ore. I rarely use it, but usually have so many blocks of it I tend to start throwing it away before starting a new world. People can do awesome stuff with it, including build computers, but I'm less creative, hidden doors are about my speed, and in single player mode that's not particularly useful. I like the stone itself for building low light flooring, you need silk touch to get it though. I think you can get the dust with a stone pick, but you'll die of old age, an iron one is better. +Random Terrain
Speaking of that game, I got tired of the demon-like evil stuff, so I quit playing. I also got tired of the attacks on my buildings every freaking night. I wish the game was customizable so different things could be turned off. Tanooki
I never minded the night attacks in Terraria, they're easy. You just have a door or wall up where your door is and it's a safety net. Get caught below, wall yourself in for a few minutes until daylight. Minecraft though I forgot about that compared to Terraria which has a permanent gear/weapon that doesn't break after a few uses which sucks. Also the crafting gets a bit too insane and it's hard to figure out what makes most things and in what order, let alone if you can find the stuff on that map of yours. Minecraft almost has too many variables that are random that can just screw you while the other while still deep isn't taking it too far. Video
I got my start on Minecraft so I know how to do things on it, it has more limited creative things, you got a forge, crafting table and can make most things with that. Terraria has so many more crafting devices, and no explanation on how things are made. There is either no bed, or an as of yet, an unknown requirement to make one I haven't found. Minerals are also far harder to find on Terraria. Your spawn area isn't a problem, but once your outside of that the monsters ramp up in a hurry, and some will just walk through your door, and kill you quickly. Both games have their pros and cons, in Minecraft I tend to quit once I get my town set up, in Terraria I tend to lose interest before getting my town set up due to the inability to find needed supplies to keep building. To build basic stuff like buildings Terraria is far easier, but for more complex stuff I'd say Minecraft is. I think overall Minecraft is easier, due to not being constantly attacked, and the ability to defend even a basic door from monsters. Mord
I think you can get the dust with a stone pick, but you'll die of old age, an iron one is better. Typically in minecraft if it takes that long to break a block it'll just turn to dust at the end and not drop anything. I mostly use the dust myself for automating various things, particularly with making xp traps (ender farms, gold farms, good ol' spawner traps or blaze farms, etc) I have made elevators and multi-destination railway stations as well. Some more creative than others. I never tend to get completely bored with minecraft all the same since I keep switching up what I want to do. I'll build for a bit, then explore for a bit, build a bit, explore a bit, do some farming, run around some caves, etc etc. Typically this results with me having like 20-40 half done projects that get slowly worked on bit by bit but never end up getting done. I actually built a delay-based adding machine, and a signal based subtracting machine. Can't make into a single unit though...
