Keatah
How can a post have 0 views and still be liked by someone? It's happening..
Albert
Because view counts are updated periodically instead of writing to the database every time someone views a thread. So, a new thread will have zero views for a short period of time after it is created. ..Al
Keatah
I'm sure that's the deal. I just don't recall ever seeing 0 replies and 0 views before. Just wondering if some minor change or something changed in the past 2 months to make it have more of a delay..
RodLightning
I liked post #1 this morning just to watch it sit there with zero views and one like, illustrating you point. I am easily amused. It appears to have corrected as this thread presently has 78 views.
Keatah
This whole thing has got me hanging on the edge of my seat! A post I made 2 days ago is still at 0. And someone else in a "status update" made mention of the same phenomenon. So something's going on.. And now this thread is up to 86 views like 15 minutes later. So.. Maybe some sub-forums and sections are buggy or something. Edited September 24, 2017 by Keatah
RodLightning
Like quantum particles that are invisible unless you are looking at them, so are view counters on massive online forums.
Keatah
Heh. This one is up to 93 now, and the other one is still rotting at 0, after 3 days. And I know it should be more, because I viewed it and I made my 2 buddies view it too. I'm thinking a post needs a reply for it to be updated, or have the counts displayed as other than zero. I bet a reply to the thread will suddenly indicate "1" reply, and the views will jump to the correct number of views. --- going to test that.. --- And boom! It now shows 1 reply and 33 views, instantly updated as fast as I could refresh. So it looks like maybe both fields have to be non-zero, or there has to be a reply. --- Yes. Looks like there has to be a new additional reply made before both views & replies are updated. Edited September 24, 2017 by Keatah
Albert
Yes. Looks like there has to be a new additional reply made before both views & replies are updated. That is interesting and not something I've noticed before. If that's the case, I'd certainly call it a bug in the forum software. Will have to see if this has been "fixed" in the newest version of the forum software (which was basically rewritten from scratch). ..Al
Keatah
The thought of newly re-written 'everything' is scary. For a while I'd expect the Web Comments'll jam-packed with bug reports. If not real ones, then ones that stem from not knowing how the new stuff works.

Albert
The thought of newly re-written 'everything' is scary. For a while I'd expect the Web Comments'll jam-packed with bug reports. If not real ones, then ones that stem from not knowing how the new stuff works. It's actually been out for a while now, so it's pretty stable at this point and it's unlikely we'll see much in the way of bugs that haven't already been reported and fixed. I just haven't upgraded it here yet as it's a huge amount of work for me to perform such a major upgrade. I'll likely have to spend a week full-time working on the migration. I already have it running on another server so I could confirm that I can upgrade the forum without issues, but the entire forum theme needs to be redone, and I have to install various third-party modifications to replace some functionality for mods I have installed presently (as these also had to be rewritten). But I do expect many messages asking how to do things that may have changed in some fashion. And I'm sure some people will complain, as is usually the case when the forum changes in any significant way. ..Al
carlsson
I've been wondering this myself, but thought it was not significant enough to mention. I came to the same conclusion as Keatah did, view counts won't update until someone has replied to your first post. Then again if nobody has anything to add to a discussion, it barely matters how many have even read it.
Keatah
Some information is a one-way announcement. And not everything needs a reply. But the post count tells the OP how curious the community is about a certain topic.
carlsson
I saw some threads in July have 0 replies but an updated view count. It could be a combination of what Albert wrote above, that perhaps once a month the database is rebuilt with updated counters, and threads with replies have their counters updated continuously.
