What have you actually PLAYED tracker for 2018 (Season 11)

Recommended Posts

I found it to be an improved version of Lemonade Stand with some wargame elements...

That's pretty much what it is. Still, it works well as a multiplayer game and we had a lot of fun with it. So there's a lot of nostalgia involved for me. Once more sophisticated strategy/management games like Vermeer became available, we changed to those, of course.

There were a few other systems played around here this past week, mainly the Atari 2600 for the High Score Club (with the helpful addition of a new Harmony Encore cart), but the big system that both myself and the misses spent the majority of the week enjoying was the Sega Genesis. With our Genesis collection being rather small at the moment all the games we played ended up being either on the excellent Genesis 6-Pak compilation cart or via emulation on the Wii, but it was still a great time even without access to the original carts.

We started off the week doing another play through of the original Sonic the Hedgehog, swapping the controller between zones again but this time switching up the order so we each got to play the zones the other played during our play through last week. We didn't manage to get all the chaos emeralds this time around but it was still a lot of fun. Next the misses decided to give Streets of Rage a try, which she had never played before, and beat it with Blaze on her first attempt. She actually didn't use a single continue until she got to the final boss!

After Sonic and Streets of Rage I spent some time checking out the other games on Genesis 6-Pak, including my arch nemesis game The Revenge of Shinobi, and for the first time in 25 years I finally managed to get past the waterfall section in the second level. I kept playing all the way up to level 6 before running out of continues, but now that I figured out how to get past the part of the second level that I've been stuck on for decades I'll definitely be looking forward to playing it again in the near future. I really enjoyed the Original mode in Super Hang-On as well and I have a feeling I'll be coming back to that game also before too long.

Next up the misses and I sat down and checked out Splatterhouse 2 & 3 via emulation, and holy cow was Splatterhouse 3 ever awesome! We didn't manage to beat it but we did get all the way to level 5 with both Rick's wife and son still alive, which was no easy feat. We're definitely going to have to get a physical copy of that game before too long. Unfortunately Splatterhouse 2 wasn't nearly as fun and after less than an hour we were both feeling pretty tired of the tedious gameplay and having to replay every level 20 or 30 times before figuring out exactly when and where to jump, duck, attack, etc to avoid the endless barrage of cheap hits from the hordes of enemies. I don't think we'll be playing Splatterhouse 2 again any time soon.

Lastly, the one other gaming highlight of the week for me was the time I spent trying out Castlevania: Bloodlines via emulation last night. Holy crap that game is awesome! It was everything I could ask for from a 16-bit Castlevania game, and the only complaint I could possibly make is that you only get two continues and that's it. Fortunately there is a password save system though, so I think with some practice I could eventually beat it with the two continues allotted if I spend the time to get good at it. What I do know for sure though is that physical copies of Castlevania: Bloodlines and Splatterhouse 3 have both jumped to the top of my Sega Genesis wants list!

Looking ahead to next week I'm not too sure what I'll be playing. I did replace the disk drive in my Wii this week so I've got a ton of games I could play, I just haven't quite felt like investing myself in any 10 to 20+ hour long games lately; which pretty much every game on the Wii is. So for now I've been pretty content playing shorter 1 to 2 hour Sega Genesis games, but who knows, maybe I'll pick out something a little more modern and spooky to play for Halloween next week. I do know the misses was talking about playing Resident Evil 2 on the PlayStation next week, so maybe I'll pick out a survival horror game to sit down and spend some time with too. :)

Until next week, happy gaming and a spooktacular Halloween to you and yours!

Atari 2600

Space Invaders: 15 min

Tape Worm: 6 min

Track and Field: 4 min

Commodore 64

Burnin’ Rubber: 5 min

Kaiser: 40 min

Park Patrol: 15 min

My playtime for this week's HSC will stay around detection limit. In the case of Space Invaders that's due to the game (16A), which really doesn't take all that long :-). In the case of Track and Field it's because that game violates the 11th Commandment ("Thou shall not deliberately wreck valuable old hardware"). Never read that one in the Bible? It's in the Apocrypha, believe me.

The playtime of Burnin' Rubber and Park Patrol is notable, because I played it with my 4 1/2 year old son on my original C64. My wife didn't approve.

EVIDENCES OF THE WEEK:

1) Ghost Manor gameplay footage, presented for 2600 NEW HSC Season 8, Week 4 (Halloween Special)

2) My lastest scores on Missile Command played on console - this week I chose Game 13, Difficulty B/B just to have fun

3) Lots of scores noted on my identification paper when I played Space Invaders for HSC (Bonus - Game 16-AA, more frustrating!!)

Surprisingly I never really got into this on consoles but I really got into it today lol

The main reason I wanted this cabinet as its my all time favorite arcade :) Plays pretty much as I remember the original cab :)

Here are my times for this past week (October 29th through November 4th)...

Arcade:

Lunar Lander - 2 min.

Super Burger Time - 17 min. in 2 sessions

Visual PinMAME:

Baby Pac-Man - 50 min. in 2 sessions

This week I played a bit of Super Burger TIme because I've been playing the regular version recently, and I also tried Lunar Lander because it's one of the games that are now featured as easter eggs in the new release of Tesla's firmware, so you can play it in their cars. Well, 2 minutes was enough to know what's going on.

Then I played some more Baby Pac-Man in Visual PinMAME because I was looking for a formula describing the correct flipper behavior. There's one trick called "Post pass" where you pass the ball from one flipper to the other by releasing the flipper for a short time, and by pressing it again the ball is deflected by the bumper above the flipper, going back to the lane leading to the flipper and rolling over the flipper onto the other one. Sadly, this trick doesn't work on my version of Baby Pac-Man because the bumper's too far receded for that. But it also doesn't work in Visual PinMAME either as I found out. ;-) Anyway, I tried to get the flippers to work as realistically as possible.

Atari 2600: 127 minutes

It was another Sega heavy week around here this past week, and yet again 100% of my household's gaming time was eligible for the classic gaming tracker! I had a few Wii games lined up to play for Halloween, but when my Wii's new replacement disc drive that I installed last week failed just 3 days after I installed it my Halloween gaming plans had to be scrubbed. Instead I ended up playing Castlevania: Bloodlines and (for the first time) Super Castlevania IV via emulation, and the misses joined me for some Zombies Ate My Neighbors as well. They were all wonderful games and I'd have a tough time choosing whether I like the Sega Genesis or Super Nintendo Castlevania game better, as they each have their strong points and weak points, but at the moment I'm leaning towards Super Castlevania IV on the SNES simply because it gives you unlimited continues and the Castlevania: Bloodlines on the Genesis only gives you 2 continues. On the flip side, there's a good reason Super Castlevania IV gives you unlimited continues; since it does it crazy difficult in the later stages and I think I prefer the Castlevania: Bloodlines' mellower difficulty in the later stages.

I spent the remainder of the week after Halloween playing random Genesis games that I was curious about trying out about (Growl, Thunder Force II & Lightening Force, and Sub-Terrania), then late in the week I got copies of Lethal Enforcers I & II in the mail and spent some time enjoying them. They're both excellent games and I'd be hard pressed to choose which I like better. The original Lethal Enforcers has a great late 80's or early 90's theme that really appeals to me, though having to replay a level if you accidentally shoot a civilian makes it super tough. I was stuck on level 2 for probably an hour before I managed to memorize where and when all the civilians pop up, though fortunately once you get past level 2 the civilians are few and far between; and the ones that do pop up are good about announcing their presence so you don't accidentally shoot them. Once I got past level 2 I breezed through levels 3, 4, and 5 all the way up to the final boss; who promptly demolished me in seconds because I didn't know that you had to shoot off parts of the boss in a specific order. Great game, but definitely watch a gameplay video or read a strategy guide before taking on that final boss; since the game doesn't exactly give you time to figure it out on your own.

Lethal Enforcers II: Gun Fighters was a ton of a fun as well, and thankfully you don't have to replay the level if you accidentally shoot a civilian in this one. There's a lot more weapon variety and destructible environments in Lethal Enforcers II too, though the difficulty does feel a bit higher than the original and the bosses are serious bullet sponges that take hundreds of shots to bring down. I wasn't able to get very far in this game on my first try, but it was a ton of fun so I know I'll be coming back to play it many more times in the weeks to come. The only other games I played this past week were a few Atari 2600 High Score Club games, and oh man was I in for a surprise with Track & Field. I had no idea just how much of a workout playing that game was going to be! After playing for 45 minutes I was pretty well drenched in sweat and huffing and puffing like I had just run an actual marathon, and 3 days later my arm was still sore. I just feel lucky that I didn't break my joystick while playing!

As far as the misses' gaming time this past week went, outside of playing Zombies Ate My Neighbors with me on Halloween she stuck to Resident Evil 2 on the PlayStation all week. She did two full play throughs of the game, playing Scenario A with Claire then Scenario B with Leon, and had as much fun playing it as ever. Resident Evil 2 is one of those games that she seems to play through at least once a year, and I can't say I blame her since it's definitely a timeless classic of the survival horror genre. Looking ahead to next week I'm not sure what she'll be playing, but I do have a couple childhood favorite Genesis games that I picked up on eBay coming in the mail so it looks like it'll probably be another Sega heavy week for me next week. I did get a second replacement disc drive for the Wii in the mail today, and if this new one doesn't fail immediately like the last one did then I might have to get in some Wii gaming time too.

That's all for this week, so until next time and as always, best wishes and happy gaming to you and yours! :)
