Which Arcade Game Did You Put The Most Money Into?

Tough one! I have a feeling the one I put the most money into was *not* actually my favorite, but a game that toed the line between being frustratingly difficult and fun, with novel technology that I found impressive and some kind of reward I thought I was working towards.

I'm gonna say Dragon's Lair.

Alternately, it could have been MACH 3, Vs. Tennis, Asteroids, Lunar Lander (which I played any time I saw it anywhere), Tempest, or Pac-Man just due to its ubiquity.

Also, if we're not adjusting for inflation, then The Walking Dead has to be right up there! I must have spent about $50 on that game in one weekend a little while ago.

Probably Star Wars, or Spy Hunter. It was so very long ago. There's a reason I really liked home games, and was thrilled when they surpassed the arcade while retaining the same quick style of play.

It was definitely before the age of "the clock is ticking but you can buy more time with money" (looking at you, Gauntlet)

It certainly wasn't the "I hate you, I will spam you with tons of enemies and you must insert more coins to continue! No, wait, please don't walk away ..." (The Simpsons, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, just about any gun game)

and it absolutely wasn't Dragon's "insert coin, bonk bonk bonk, you're dead, hope you liked the cartoon graphics" Lair.

Free-to-play games that beg for money in exchange for Smurfberries almost seem like a good deal compared to some of the quarter-suckers from the past.

So true. People get so bent out of shape over OPTIONAL micro transactions these days. But I remember the arcades when games were truly "pay to win"

When buying home games, particularly arcade ports, I would think to myself, "hmmm this game is fifteen dollars. Would I play the arcade version sixty times? If yes (it was always yes), I'd buy it."

Nowadays I'm more like, "hmmm is this game worth my time? If yes, then it's probably worth my money, too."

Free to play isn't all bad, it just needs to be monetized respectfully. I think we're getting there.

I would have to go back to high school (yea, that long ago) to remember the arcade machines that would eat my lunch money. Grandma would give me 5 to 7 bucks, I would buy either 2 bean tostadas from Taco Bell OR a Hostess fruit pie and a small milk, and the rest of the money would go to:

***Donkey Kong---The pie factory would kill me in the later levels, had to get that high score!

***Tron---The light cycles portion alone would hook you to the point of eating no lunch just to have extra money.

***Ms. Pac-Man---Who didn't spend money on this one?

All that money......and Grandma would wonder why I always came home starving for dinner?!

Good question, I honestly don't know. I had a strange stint where I was staying in a hotel for an extended period of time when I was probably 12 or 13. The hotel was connected to a mall and there was a Nintendo Vs machine that played Tennis. I played that a ton, first beating the beginner and then trying to beat the harder opponents. That machine probably got more of my actual quarters/tokens than any other just from that stint.

A second might be something more recent. I put quite a few tokens in Stern's Tron pinball machine a few years ago. Maybe that's second.
