HSC Season 15 Round 2: Qix

Recommended Posts

Hm. I've only played on my PAL 130XE so far and while it isn't super fast, it is enough for me. I must bring out my NTSC 800 or try emulation to see how much faster it is on that. If the 5200 game is half as fast, it must be crawling along, almost like a turn based strategy game?

So far, it makes a 100k difference in score. So, something must be really different. I can usually get to 5th or 6th screen on 5200, but even 1 screen is a stretch on my emulated A8. Youtube videos show it is indeed faster, but not like what I'm seeing. I'll just let it go. Heck I never even win our version, lol.

Hm. Using Altirra, I roughly measure it takes 6 seconds to draw a red (slow) line vertically across the screen on PAL, and 5 seconds on NTSC. That is indeed a difference in the long run.

For comparison, in the 5200 version hacked for 8-bit computers, it takes about 7 seconds to draw the equivalent red line across on NTSC. While PAL 5200 is an anomaly, I get roughly 7 seconds on that version too so perhaps the speed difference is not as apparent on the 5200 version, just the screen layout if emulation is to believe.

I realized I never got SIO2SD to work on my 800, and I'm too lazy to reflash my AtariMax for this purpose, so probably I won't try it on real hardware.

I started 5200 and A8 via emulation at 50% and timed until sparx kill you without moving. Even with A8 running 50%, the sparx get you 2 seconds faster than on 5200. All timed in NTSC.

A8 @50%= 9sec

A8 @100%= 5sec

5200= 11sec

It's interesting, as I never played A8 version enough to note exactly how different it is. I'll have to give another look at our shared titles. :) Anyways, I did figure out how to make some progress up to about 3/4 my normal on 5200.

Emulated A8 @100% NTSC- 86,121

If you want to improve your scores think about my tips - if you continue around the edges you are focring yourself to play nearer and nearer to the Qix. If you can separate an area using the quick bluie draw or set a couple of traps for the Qix where you can seal him in, you can use the slow fill to capture the large blocks!

I ended up playing Qix after all. My score is low as I don't have the patience to play this game again and again. The game seems to take forever to fill in the screen once you enclose an area. Also, why does it take so long to start a new "guy" when your marker is destroyed? Here's my score:

Qix - 84,242 (NTSC, Real Atari 130XE)

Does anyone have tips on for keeping your marker on the line without drawing? I think in the arcade game there are two buttons (fast and slow draw), which make this much easier to do. TRBB's score of 815,656 makes it clear that a slow-draw button isn't necessary to get a great score in this game. Maybe next season we can put the 5200 version of this game up for vote?

One last thing: I'm surprised that the type-in game Fill'er Up wasn't played as a bonus game this round. It seems like it would have been a good fit.

Thanks for playing

As you get the larger scores and the game gets more intense you are glad that it takes a second or two to fill the screen so you can plan your next scramble past the sparx. As I mentioned use the slow draw to start with after each life so you can get a feel for the Qix's direction, also use the slow draw to stay on your lines if you have some tricky bits.

We have played the 5200 version here before and it's a good game but if pushed to choose there are some of us who think this one is better and you might be suprised to know it's the most selected game ever in the HSC! We've played Filler Up before too it is a decent version but I wanted to have a couple of single game rounds just to start the season with. Remember the games are suggested and polled and we all have our favourites :)

No improvement from me and the swearing factor is increasing as I make more and more stupid mistakes  :-o :D

Reminder round closes Weds 10pm UK (5pm EST)

After a couple of attempts made it to 73586.

A great game though it's a shame the elegant moves of the Qix got butchered when it was rendered with P/M graphics. I suppose arcade-style "long" Qix would have overtaxed our Ataris.
