Atari Junior Box Packing, What am I Missing Here?

I feel like I must be completely stupid, but I'm just at a loss here. I have an Atari Jr in the original dark red box. The box has a long tongue on it which folds into a shelf inside. Once this shelf is made, though, the joystick does not fit. Upright, on its side, upside down, it doesn't matter, it's a mile away from even coming close to fitting above, below, or next to this cardboard. I've tried reasoning that maybe this cardboard tongue doesn't actually form a shelf and is supposed to be fashioned into something else, but can't figure out what that would be. Furthermore, and more mysteriously,, the console and the controller don't really fit inside the box together at all, even without this cardboard insert being involved. Okay, so what super obvious thing am I somehow failing to grasp, here? Apparently the previous owner couldn't figure it out, either, as it was shipped with the joystick outside the box.

Thanks for any input!

Maybe the console sits under the cardboard tongue with the back towards the front of the box, then the back part of the tongue angles down over the angled part of the console. The controller sits with its bottom to the back of the box with the end of the stick going into the hole.

I tried what I think youre describing. Its the only way the console and joystick fit together, but its a bit awkward and I doubt its how they would have packed it. And either way, the cardboard insert really has no way of accommodating this.

I think its clear that the joystick was not packaged in this box, but it literally says right on it that it was....

Didnt Best have a lot of NOS ones they sold? Hopefully someone that opened a brand new one will know. At this point, Im just curious.

You're pushing the shelf insert too far down into the box. Here are pics of mine all packed. Because the front of the Jr. is so narrow, the part of the shelf closest to you is higher than the back of the shelf which accomodates the thicker back of the console. Just place the joystick base on its side under the front part of the box and it will fit. In fact, as you can see, I have 2 joysticks in my box along with the power cord and RF cord. It's like magic!

No version of the 2600 Ive ever seen used styrofoam. That started with the NES to my knowledge.

Wow, it's amazing that I've never thought about this before. I guess I never had an original, in-box woodgrain VCS but it seems they used folded cardboard (like today's console packaging!) and a little bubble wrap. http://atariage.com/forums/topic/166372-2600-packing/

The Odyssey 2, Atari 5200, and Colecovision definitely used styrofoam, and they precede the NES.
