Question about arcade cabinet with multiple games

Recommended Posts

I was thinking about an arcade cabinet I encountered somewhere at a commercial arcade (I specify this because it was not something for the home) that had multiple games in it -- Asteroids, Defender, et cetera. I'm trying to figure out all the games it had on it. When I did a search, I only came up with cabinets selling for a few thousand dollars for the home (no coin slots). These particular ones had a pretty impressive list of games I haven't played in a while (like Zookeeper) but I have a feeling the cabinet I played did not have such a rare title...but I also am not certain.

I'm just curious if anyone knows what cabinet I likely encountered, and if there is a link to info on it.

It might be one of those little iCade boards. Look up iCade 60in1 and spread out from there. They're mostly accurate but a few games get a few issues, but they are original arcade games dumped onto basically a multicart if it were a console game. You get a basic menu to select from, usually in gray with a few panels, select what to do and get down to it. They seem to be popular in the 60 size, but there are others into the hundreds.

There's also the Williams multiboards.

A crappy redemption arcade nearby has a machine that you're probably thinking about that I believe has Asteroids and Defender. Machine never worked when I was there. It's been a while since I was there and I can't remember the name of it.

60 in 1 doesn't have either of those games. The Williams 19 in 1 has defender but not asteroids. I'd guess it's one of the many xxx in 1 jamma boards that are out there. Probably installed that in an existing cabinet that the board went out on.

I know it's not on the 60 but it's like the most common for old games and if you search it other variations pop up pretty fast on google which is why I went there. I have the 60in1 in a cocktail I have here at the house and it's nice, a few small flaws, but overall quite decent though I wish it would properly save scores (not that those games did once the power was off back then anyway.)

Thanks for all these replies, they were helpful in my search, although I do not believe they are the cabinet game collection with which I interacted.

Because of these replies and tips, I started really thinking about it, and I think one clue is I played Gauntlet and maybe Joust. I'm hoping whatever cabinet it was will have some of the games VectorGamer listed...I would love to play Fast Food, for instance. (I'm fairly certain I would have noticed that one as I went through the digital selection wheel.)

I remember not playing this too much when I visited the arcade because -- and I'm sure all these types of cabinets have this issue -- the controls, not being specific to each game, make it a challenging experience.

I'm going to visit the place again, hopefully soon (not sure it is open right now), and I will report back what it is (I'm presuming it will still be there).

I appreciate everyone's time, and checked out all the posts/tips...

Have you tried the dip switch on the board? The 60 in 1 will save scores with it flipped on(although not your initials for whatever reason).

Yeah I'm aware of that, but they don't still seem to retain after. They'll I think retain with the power on and you jump around on games. But that's another issue, the high scores I read can get transposed onto others which can be another disaster. I'm not too upset over it I got the whole thing for free other than dropping around $40 on repairs/missing parts.

They all are, it's an uncared about known failure on that chinese board. They also have really cheap welds on those sound amps so be careful with them as mine popped off. I'm using a stereo sound bar in my cocktail cabinet so it actually is better but it would have been nice to use the on board mono arcade speaker as a choice.

I visited that arcade today and can tell everyone what the name of the cabinet is. It is called "Global VR Global Arcade Classics."

Here are the games I played today:

--Jungle Hunt

--Joust

--Liberator (don't recall playing this, not even on the Nintendo DS collections...a pleasant riff on Missile Command).

--Asteroids Deluxe (can't really play this on this kind of machine because of the control scheme)

--Space Duel (see above).

--Stargate (called Defender II; also difficult with the controls, but I honestly can't recall how Defender/Stargate were set up...was the thrust really a separate button?...I had a hard time with the buttons, and realize why I should appreciate the joystick configuration of Defender on Atari 800XL)

--Rampage

--Dragon's Lair I and II (I use the term played very loosely here...this game in my opinion was a true ripoff in the sense that the controls were, and are, ridiculous...to me anyway...I could never figure them out, and today I lost all my lives in whatever is the minimum time it takes to lose all one's lives...but, and I'm sure everyone can understand this, it still was fun, and I did it in honor of the unfortunately overrated Stranger Things)

--Elevator Action (never played that one, also had a hard time with it)

--Satan's Hollow (surprised to see this one, in a very good way, of course...I don't know if difficulties can be adjusted, but it seems it was in this case, I lasted longer than I should have, even though I got to the same spot I usually get to...seems as if some attack waves were slower than I recalled, will have to compare with my Gamecube Midway-collection software that has it...love this game)

--Millipede (this actually worked well with the trackball)

I was hoping Fast Food was part of this, but it was not. Unfortunately, the other one I was looking forward to, Zookeeper, I think was on it judging by YouTube videos and a search, but I guess I missed it! Is it possible it wasn't on it? Most likely not, and here's what I think happened...for some reason, as I spun the selection wheel, when I got to Warlords, the logo for Zookeeper might not have been clear...I seemed to go right from Warlords to 720o, but a YouTube video seems to show the logo as the wheel was moving past it. Hard to say, I never played that game much so I am not familiar with the actual rendering of the title, but I wanted to interact with it because I remember watching a friend play it when we were younger in that very same arcade (he really liked it). Now most of the classic cabinets are gone; I used to love playing Congo Bongo there as well.

As one can imagine, most of the classic cabinets have given way to modern claw/casino-type stuff, but there are still a few there. I played, in standalone format, Asteroids (over 30,000 and an extra ship on my first ship, which is excellent for me!), Galaga (did the thing with letting one ship get caught, and then I lost that ship when, after shooting the enemy that captured it, I just sat there waiting for it to spin and join me...unfortunately, I did not realize that during that sequence I was not immune to the shots raining down on me!), and Centipede (was playing Centipede and Millipede on the Atari Flashback Portable last night, so it was cool to play the arcade versions today).

I may try to go back this week to see about the Zookeeper situation if I am able. One note: the machine wasn't working initially (the credits were not showing up after I deposited the currency) but the situation was quickly fixed...was worried I wasn't going to be able to play! The attendant had to reboot the system...

For those who may be interested, I visited that arcade once again today and found that the cabinet did in fact contain Zoo Keeper. Had a fun time playing it. Also played Bubbles, Crystal Castles and Jungle Hunt. I actually got the high score for Satan's Hollow, which was pretty cool, although as you might imagine, the scores weren't really that high...I had to beat approximately 48,000 and I achieved a little over 50,000.

Now I have the urge to watch some Starcade...

If you really want to have one of those, you can build one yourself by modifying an old non-working Poker style cabinet. I don't know where you live, but I have 3 of them that I'm going to be converting to Multies when funds become available. I already gutted the cabinets. You can probably find an existing cabinet cheap, but I really wouldn't recommend taking an old "classic game" cabinet for the project. There are many xxx in 1 boards available out there, and while I have a small collection of dedicated cabinets, I want 1 Multi just to be able to play other games without taking up too much more room. As it stands, my "home arcade" is in our dining room.

Multi-Cades have their place, but "game collectors" generally frown upon converting an existing classic. Poker machines, as I mentioned above, are fair game, not to mention they take up a bit less space. You will likely have to replace the monitor, though, as the original ones tend to have severe burn in. If you can do the work yourself, you can probably do a full conversion to a Poker cabinet for only a few hundred bucks... which is way cheaper than the retail price of one of those custom built jobs.

There are several "complete" kits that you can buy, the one I'm looking at retails for roughly $100 and includes everything except the monitor and cabinet(board, joysticks, buttons, harness, power supply). My uncle has offered to "cut" a new control panel for me, I'll just need to find a bezel and some artwork for the CP. Since I've got 3 available cabinets, I'm going to keep one and sell the other two. Hell, it's even possible to mount a new monitor in such a way that you can switch between vertical and horizontal.

Thanks for the reply, Iggy SJ. I wish I had the money to engage the hobby on that level as you describe (and I certainly would love to own some one-game cabinets), but I'm still waiting on that count. A lot of great information in the post on how to create one of those multi-cade machines, thanks for that. Unfortunately, being mechanically disinclined, I could not DIY this situation...
