Help With Starting To Program

Hi, I am a little new to Atari programming, although I do have a little experienced with EPROMs, programmers, soldering, and so on. I understand that batari basic is what most people use for programming, but my Windows 10 computer will not run it, and it says that it is a virus. I'm thinking about either hacking an existing game or making a simple 4k game from scratch and putting it on a cartridge. Does anyone know of programming alternatives or how to get batari basic to work on my computer? Thanks.

I programmed my first homebrew game in assembly last year and it was a lot of fun. I don't have any experience with batari basic but if you want to take the plunge into assembly I recommend the tutorials by Andrew Davie and Darrel Spice to be good places to start. The Stella Programming Guide is a must read. This forum at Atari Age is a wealth of information. I recommend spending a lot of time here as you encounter questions and issues. I also highly recommend Steven Hugg’s 2016 book on Making Games for the Atari 2600.

If you want to use batari basic, make certain that you have the latest version. The one pinned to the forum is over 10 years old. Check here for getting started with a newer version that should we with Windows 10:

For assembly programming I second scitari's recommends. All of them have been useful to me.
