PAL CDi on NTSC TV help please

Recommended Posts

My apologies ahead of time if this is a dumb question, but Im not much of a tech person, just a guy who loves games! After a quick google search and looking thru other forums I cant really find the answer Im looking for, I may not be looking hard enough...

So obviously my PAL CDi 450 on my TV is displaying in black and white, which appears to be a common problem with some consoles, is there anyway I can get it to display in color? Im seeing these PAL to NTSC composite converters on amazon and eBay, would this correct the issue? Thanks AtariAge!

If your picture doesn't roll, it's a good start, and yes, a PAL to NTSC converter will do the trick.

If your TV is a modern display, tr poking in the menus to find if there is a color selection somewhere. Or maybe try to find the factory menu.

I wa able to unlock NTSC-N on my European TV like that... Not that it helped me making a NTSC -M system work on it, but, I was able to add a standard choice.

?Thank you so much for the reply!!! I forgot to mention its a CRT TV if that makes a difference, maybe I should look thru the menu settings on it... If that doesnt work, thanks for verifying that the converter box will correct the issue, gonna order one soon. Edited by FOX2600

I have a PAL CDi that I connect to any NTSC TV I have via an el-cheapo converter (my CDi does not have SVideo or RGB, just composite and yet it is still very acceptable).

My converter was like 30US$ or something .... so give it a whirl. My CDi unit is a 490.

Awesome thank you, brings me peace of mind knowing the converter is the way to go and should correct it ?

If it's a CRT TV recent enough to have a menu for settings, like this :

Then you can try to find how to get into the service mode. For older TV you'll find how to do it on Internet. But if you have a converter on the way, you might not want to fool into the service menu of your TV ;)

Thank you for your help! My CRT is actually a Philips which is funny being that Im hooking up a Philips CDi to it, Im glad it worked out that way lol seems fitting. I forgot to mention to you as well after watching some videos I noticed the rolling affect you were talking about, grateful mine isnt doing that just black and white. Going to fiddle with these settings and converter box now, thanks again for your picture for reference!

Hey there could you tell me what brand converter youre using? I got the MINI brand converter for $15 and although it does work and the color looks great, its sort of displaying this weird wavy/ripple affect with the graphics. It only does it when the CDi is on not when the converter is on its boot up menu screen or whatever you want to call it. Dont know if its the converter itself or it has something to do with the model of CDi-450?...
