Atari 7800 doesnt differentiate between left and right action buttons

When I press one fire button, the system acts as though im pressing both at the same time. This is happening with both of my controllers. Do you think plugging and unplugging controllers while the system was on may have damaged something? The TIA and the RIOT were replaced VERY recently. Thanks fellas!

Check to make sure the Difficulty Switch settings for the game isn't impacting expected results.

For a title like Xevious, the position of the difficulty switches determine button behavior.

I'll try that when I get home from work. I'm mostly worried that I may have quite possibly, accidentally touched a wire from pin 7 (the 5V pin) of the controller port to one of the action buttons while trouble shooting the button pads on my 7800/NES controller kit.
