Nothing wrong in admitting having played a lot of Asteroids. Any version.

You know it. I remember when I was a kid I think I played for 4 hours straight. I remember having a hard time standing up! I have many great memories playing that game. It always has been and always will be one of my favorite game. Any version!

Asteroids is a classic that was always a fun one! Asteroids Deluxe isn't bad either...

I agree. It amazes me the awesome job that programmers do with homebrews. I'm doing a multi-part episode later about my favorite homebrews and hacks. It's going to end up being multi-multi part as I keep discovering new ones. When I do talk about them I always make sure to give credit to the authors and tell people to head here @ atariage so they can purchase them.

Asteroids Deluxe in the arcade is, to me, one of the 4 perfect games I have played in my life.

Perfect because it can't be improved upon. The original is superb but DX's shields removes the luck element. The smarter ufos prevent lurking and the satellites just add enough variety without spoiling the beautiful purity of the game idea.

(My other "perfects" are Super Breakout on 2600, Tetris on anything (!) and Super Monkey Ball on Gamecube).

I loved the 2600 port of Asteroids back in the day. Played it for YEARS alone - and with my brother and cousins. :)

That's what makes a game a classic, at least that's what I think. When playing a game brings back positive memories for you.

If you're going to emulate the arcade Asteroids games (both regular & Deluxe) I highly recommend using the emulator titles "AAE" (Another Arcade Emulator). Most emulated versions of Asteroids can't recreate the bright shots from the ship simply because they can't duplicate the vector display. So the shots end up looking very tiny and small, like little pale pellets.. pretty horrible.

AAE attempts to compensate for that somewhat in how it draws it on the screen giving an illusion of the "glow".. pretty good compromise I have to say. :)

Video starts with Asteroids Deluxe and shows regular Asteroids @around the 2:10 mark

That's a decent compromise. I own a Deluxe cabinet without the blue overlay - think I prefer it that way. This emu glows a bit too much but I guess that can be adjusted to the player's liking. Tempest looked pretty good.

I'm also very fond of the 7800 version of Asteroids. I rate it pretty much as the best official home version of the game. It's a pity the 7800's video output isn't the best though.

The 2600's flip and shield options were fun - but the flip was really hard to get used to. It was also fun to crank up the difficulty with the fast rocks (which really adjusts the angles rather than the speed) and then disable specials and extra lives and then trying to clock the game at 100K.

Asteroids Deluxe arcade is also my favorite of the Asteroids games, with Space Duel a very close second.

Also, after having played Asteroids on the 7800, I cannot play any other home port. IMHO, that is darn near the perfect home port of Asteroids.

Thanks, I'm going to try it out.

I love all things Asteroids! This is my favorite arcade game... love those vector graphics and the sound of your ship when it shoots. I agree with what others have said, concerning the 7800 version of Asteroids. This is an excellent game, especially when you pair it with a Starplex controller. BTW, if you own a 7800, you must check out Asteroids Deluxe by Pac Man Plus. All the elements of Asteroids Deluxe are included, as well as a hidden version of the original game, making this an incredible 2 in 1 purchase. But back to the 2600. If you're really a fan of Asteroids, you need to own Space Rocks by Darrell Spice Jr. This is the definitive Asteroids clone for the 2600. This game has it all, combining elements from Asteroids and Asteroids Deluxe with a simple and intuitive options screen that allows you to customize the game to further enhance the solid playability. Its arcade like level of difficulty, rock solid collision detection and great sounds will keep you coming back for more. :)
