Keatah
Is there a color version of Asteroids on MAME? Or, rather, does MAME have a special switch or mode that can play Asteroids in color? My search doesn't turn up much of anything regarding mame. I even got a farm sex site. So much for 2018 technology!
digdugnate
i haven't readily found a color version of the game, but i saw some stuff on how to tweak the vector overlay in MAME: In MAME's "Video Options" menu choose "Color Overlay" for color or "Standard" or "Pixel Aspect" for B+W.You can tweak the overlay color in the layout file. (default.lay file in the astdelux.zip artwork file) Code: [select] <element name="overlay"><rect><bounds x="0" y="0" width="1" height="1" /><color red="0.5333" green="1.0" blue="1.0" /></rect></element>In MAME's "Slider Controls" menu there are some simple adjustments like Screen Brightnesss, Screen Contrast, Beam Width. If those aren't enough, search for threads with keywords like "vector settings". http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=155060.0 not sure if this will help, but maybe step in right direction? mr_me
There's the Atari 2600, 800, 7800 versions of Asteroids, all playable in mame. Then there's the arcade sequels from Atari, Asteroids Deluxe, Space Duel, and Blasteroids.
Keatah
Not quite.. Not a sequel, not another home console, not an overlay. But, instead a full-color conversion based off of REV 4 romset. I heard there was color vector code written for mame specifically for color Asteroids. Blue ship, RGB rocks..

mr_me
Maybe you're thinking of this hack. https://hackaday.com/2018/10/13/arcade-asteroids-now-in-colour/ https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=Dw2TmDtUGm0&feature=youtu.be I have had a hard time playing Space Duel. The visuals are too much for me.
Keatah
I'm aware of how Space Duel was initially to be named Asteroids II. And that the SD PCBs were developed in that direction. Supposedly marketing changed direction and we now have SD instead. Edited October 18, 2018 by Keatah

MrMaddog
Maybe something like that would show up on HBMAME since they do hacked machines?
scotty
I talked to someone (who will remain nameless unless he chooses to identify himself) who is a very prevalent rom hacker and assembly programmer about this very issue. He really liked what he saw with the Arcade Jason video and said it really would not be all that hard, and said he was going to see what he can whip up. Stay tuned........ On a related note.... Back in the early 80s, there were a few of the arcades that I frequented (I was an arcade whore) that used the overlay from Star Castle on a regular Asteroids. It looked really good, but the rocks changed color on the screen depending on where they were. Many years ago, Mr. Do made me a custom LAY file for Mame with said overlay in the Asteroids artwork file, but it has since somehow disappeared, and I have been too lazy to create one myself. I hope he still does. As mentioned, I use the Star Castle overlay in Mame, like so many arcade operators did back in the 80s. Fun stuff. negative1
the original asteroids - asteroids deluxe emulator/ported version on the xbox 360 had both version with the same white vector look. only on the new flashback versions on the xbox 360/one do the rocks and ships on asteroids deluxe look blue. later -
Atari Nut
I'm noticing that the blue color in Asteroids (rev. 4) and Lunar Lander (rev. 2) on MAME comes from HLSL. If you use BGFX or OpenGL, the color is white.
