madmxx22277
asking for suggestions. I just got a cheap, dirty, stock 520ST, I know it is not the preferred model, but I got it and the powersupply and mouse for $20. I have taken it apart and started cleaning,it. The board and everything looks good, after I reassemble and receive my av cord in the mail, I will try to power it up. My question is what should I do with it, I want to be able to play games and thats about it. I don't know if the stock 520ST will run most or any games. In the end I would like to hook it up to a LCD and have one of the gotek drive emulators on it. Any other suggestions. also does anybody have a "?/" key I can purchase?, it is missing... Thanks guys. tjlazer
This is the perfect candidate for an external drive with a GOTEK drive in it as it will boot from drive A: easily and you can use a USB stick to put all the disk images on it. If you want it to get a real disk drive make sure and get the SF314 as it’s 720k. Edited October 28, 2018 by tjlazer
madmxx22277
thanks for the info, that was my thought, I don't think I have a need for a 'real' floppy. Spec wise/memory wise, will a stock 520ST run most games? I am knew to the ST's, in the late 80's/early 90's I was with the "other" guys. Had a A500 and A2000. Had a buddy that had a ST and was curious about it.
Atari030
STM/STFM/STE and MegaSTE have modulators and have AV out, ST, STF and MegaST do not. Which model is yours? Gotek will work with all of them. For maximum game compatibility 1MB is pretty useful. It really depends on what games you want to run, early ones only required 512k, some were optomised to run with more RAM. Later games will likely need 1MB for the most part. tjlazer
Since the 520ST is pretty much the baseline model, 95% of all software will run fine with it. If you don’t have the RF modulator, composite won’t work.
Atari030
True, but some games are optimised with faster loading extra this and that. 1040 STe is probably the best to grab in the modern era, but, as you say, 520ST/M/FM is the baseline. madmxx22277
Thanks for the info on the rf modulator, I guess I will have to output RGB if there is no composite.
