BassGuitari
It should work, but not in the way I'm guessing you're imagining. "Rapid Fire" tends to be something of misnomer when it comes to these peripherals--"Slow-But-Steady Continuous Automatic Fire" would have been a little more appropriate. The overwhelming majority of games for the Atari--including Xenophobe and Desert Falcon--require a shot to clear the screen before another can be fired. In such cases, a rapid-fire device won't appreciably increase your volume of fire, "cyclic rate," or "muzzle velocity" ([/gunterms]), but rather, essentially just obviates the need to press the button each time you want to fire. Put another way, it's not going to magically transform your pistol in Xenophobe into a Tommy Gun. Now, there are also a few games where shots can be canceled out by subsequent button presses, such as Defender and GORF (and come to think of it, I think even one of the weapons in Xenophobe does this as well). With these games, a rapid-fire add-on will essentially just create an extremely short-range wall of fire right in front of your ship/character, due to cycle of shots being fired and immediately canceled and refired. Games like these may be rendered very difficult play with a rapid-fire device. Furthermore, quite a few games had "rapid fire" programmed in from the start, rendering rapid-fire peripherals completely redundant.
