Gunstar
This isn't ugly, it's like every printer and modem cable I had in the 90's 71+UBu28+TL._SX425_.jpg Mathy, for this application (one side of a desk to the other, 4-6 feet) I don't think there will be much signal loss. Sorry, even though you described exactly what you just pictured, I was still thinking in my mind Male SIO connectors mounted to a small PCB, not printer cable connectors... Mathy
Hello Mr Robot This isn't ugly, it's like every printer and modem cable I had in the 90's 71+UBu28+TL._SX425_.jpg Mathy, for this application (one side of a desk to the other, 4-6 feet) I don't think there will be much signal loss. IMHO it's still ugly. Problem could not only be the length ("as long as you want" was mentioned), but you're adding a couple of connectors, which also influence the signal. If you want to use a PC-cable, why not buy one of the correct length, take off both connectors and use the remaining cable to create a really long SIO cable. That way, you only need two SIO plugs and one long PC-cable (printer, RS232, whatever). And if you choose to buy new plugs from Lotharek, you don't even need to cut up a SIO cable. And on a 25 wire cable, you could use 2 wires per signal. Sincerely Mathy

The OP is asking about an extension cord for SIO, how do you achieve that without adding a couple of connectors? Where my idea fails is that the OP said he didn't want to modify his SIO2SD, and without an SIO socket, that's not going to happen. D-sub connectors may not be 'atari' but they do work. Finding SIO plugs is easy, Lotharek supplies them (I have a couple), you can get PCB mounted SIO sockets from Brad at Best Electronics (I got one for my 1088XEL), but I don't know anyone selling inline SIO sockets. Given that, a D-sub is a cheap effective solution, but it does involve cutting the SIO2SD cable.
+CharlieChaplin
Not a cable extension... but if you have a 1010 collecting dust somewhere... you may use it as a SIO extender... you don't need to use the 1010, you also do not need the 1010 PSU, just the two SIO ports for SIO in and SIO out... Plug in your SIO2SD into the 1010 and then a SIO cable from the 1010 into the 1050. Best, B & C and Video 61 do sell 6 foot SIO cables, so if the SIO cable on the SIO2SD is quite short, use the longer one from the 1010 to the other device... (Me, I built-in two SIO2SD into two 1010 recorders - with both SIO ports still intact and fully usable...) I was thinking of putting an SIO2SD drive in my 1030 for a long time, since I never use it for a modem (though that may change) and at the same time throw in one or two APE Links too, and use all the SIO ports as a big Octopus extension. Maybe an SIO2PC too, for good measure. But lately I've been thinking about just putting an SX212 modem in the 1030 case and actually using it for 1200bps BBS'n. DavidMil
One other suggestion: Buy some 26 or so gauge (in the length and color you want), 15 wire cable and order a couple of female hoods from Best. If you do that make sure you put a small tie wrap around the cable just inside the hood to prevent pulling any wires loose. I do this and I also solder the wires to the connectors in the hood. Then you'll never have to worry about corrosion or pulling any wires loose. David

DavidMil
Hello David Isn't that what I said in message #27? Sincerely Mathy Just about the same thing. But I was thinking of something with less wires and a tighter weave then printer cable. More like a Cat 5 or so cable. I don't think you could get a printer cable inside the Atari 13 pin SIO hood without cutting some wires and insulation. But you are correct, basically We are talking about the same thing! Zap!
Update: Rather than cutting into my SIO2SD, I went ahead and bough an ApeLink board and two SIO connectors from Best Electronics. Bradly is a great guy, and got it out the same day (Friday) as I ordered, and it came today. Thank you AA user DavidMil for the suggestion! Maybe I'll buy a case later, but for now it works great!
