boxpressed
I picked up a Switch over the summer and recently got some good deals on a 3DS and a 2DS. I'd like to get Shovel Knight. I was originally going to buy the cartridge for 3DS but saw that Shovel Knight Treasure Trove from the Nintendo store seems to have all the DLC. A couple of questions for those in the know: * Is the Switch or 3DS version better? I think my son would prefer to use the 3DS. Is there any 3D effect worth experiencing? * Kind of a noob with 3DS, but if I buy it electronically and download for one device, I can't download and use it on another, right? That is, I can't buy once and use it on the 3DS and 2DS simultaneously? Thanks for any help!
+wongojack
Can't really help, but I wanted to chime in to say that I have a physical copy for PS4, but I've never even played it . . .

Unless you have a preference of console, they're going to be nearly identical. I think the only benefit of the Switch would be co-op mode. I believe the 3DS has special competitive mode only on that version, but it's some weird time trial thing you compete for high scores in. The 3DS version also has some cool 3D effects that add some nice depth to the stage designs, but I wouldn't call them so amazing to choose that version specifically for it. 3DS locks your account to that device. You won't be able to simultaneously play the same digital copy on both. Each 3DS/2DS would have to buy their own copy. I looooooooove me some Shovel Knight, and I highly recommend getting it! If you greatly prefer it (and can wait), they are planning to re-release the physical version early next year as a Complete Package with everything on it (all 4 campaigns and the fight mode) for PS4 and Switch. Amazon Link for Treasure Trove (Nintendo Switch) Otherwise, you're stuck to a digital copy. The 3DS has a physical copy, but I think it's only the core game. However! That comes with free downloadable updates that adds everything else. Let me know if you have any other questions in this regard. I'll probably get the 3DS version because I don't really care if the kid trashes the console, but I'm nervous when he plays with the Switch! If the cartridge for the 3DS allows you to download the DLC for free -- making it like Treasure Trove -- then I think I may go that route because I like to have a physical copy. But I assume that means buying a new copy because used copies may have already have their DLC claimed?

The DLC isn't so much DLC as it's free updates and was meant to be in the game. Long version? Back during Kickstarter, there was a goal for "extra campaigns". They managed to make enough to plan for 3 extra campaigns where you play as some of the enemy knights in the same general setting but altered to work with their powers. The plan was to release the first and main campaign (now titled Shovel of Hope) and then slowly release the other 3 campaigns as updates as they are finished. This started off as the game just being "Shovel Knight" and owning the game digitally beforehand or physically (when released) gained you free updates to all the extra stuff. Eventually, they changed the name to "Treasure Trove" as a way to denote the entire selection of campaigns and extras but also to raise the price from the original (amazing) price of just $14.99 to it's more current incarnation of $24.99 (cause making free updates still costs money ._.). Still a great deal for that price, but they're planning to release a final, truly finish physical copy titled Shovel Knight Treasure Trove early next year for PS4 and Switch ($39.99). HOWEVER! Physical copies of the original Shovel Knight are generally priced around $20 and all physical copies of the game get a digital update that adds all the extra stuff! (I think I got my 3DS copy for like $12~) EDIT - Okay I looked around... It looks like $20 is a used copy for most places, but I bet you can find places with some copies at that price range or lower (depending on where you are and such) Edited November 21, 2018 by KeeperofLindblum

So I'll look for a good used copy. Have a couple more hours to use this 15% off coupon on eBay!
boxpressed
Funny I just got an email from Nintendo advertising Black Friday deals, which includes Treasure Trove for 3ds for $20. I still ordered a physical cart for about $17 though.
