Auf Wiedersehen, Monty - POKEY version

For me its too hard / raw, some of the instruments were just a bit full on, I wanted them a bit softer...I know that all sounds a bit wtf but I'm not musical and don't know the names of the ways music is made but there's nothing wrong with it, I actually really liked a lot of it but then there were noises that felt unfriendly / different to the SID version. The best way I can describe what I mean is if you are not in to hard rock (I'm not) and you are used to say Jazz and then the rock heavy guitars start and it feels like a wall of noise that's just raw.

That's how some of the instruments sounded to me..

And for the very things I don't like there will be a huge number of people who love it for those exact reasons.....Its personal and just an opinion and we know the old phrase re opinions...

Faithful to Rob, definitely, done with care, most certainly but just bits that FOR ME made it a bit full on...Thumbs up for the work and dedication, thank you...I listened all the way to the end and played it again so it can't have been soo harsh :)

As said its purely the way I felt and I did say I was musically deaf :)

There's nothing wrong with it at all, just personal taste on my part, I love Jazz Funk, you may think its rubbish but it does not stop the music being great and loved, it just not every ones taste..

Yes the volume is like overdriven. Just some global volume settings would help.

It's not really funny to find the right volume inside RMT. The emulation mixes things up. Later playing them in Altirra and recording puts side noise more to the front.

But to be fair: Altirra sounds worse than the real thing.

So, you're saying that non-linear mixing is not the way to go?

The mixing is better for understanding what the real thing does. There is a non linear mixing , but that isn't exactly doing the same. To me it seems that Altirra is changing the volume if a wave gets a different pitch, which results in some overdriven sound. The real thing isn't doing that. It' actually more a cancelling, if the volume gets too loud.

Here is a different version of my "possibly never really finished" Bangkok Knights tune.

The voice is now an octave higher. And the basses sound very distorted, even if playing alone.

I've set all of my instruments to a maximum volume of 10 (A). Should the highest volume be lower than that?

The overall mixing shouldn't exceed 32 . So a start from 8 isn't the badest decision. POKEY has a lot of physically problems to fight with . So usually higher sound should be played at a lower volume than deeper sounds.

[citation needed] or better even, proof!

You can easily have a total volume of 40 without distortion on real hardware. If you were to analyze all of the best eighties tunes, you will certainly find lots of them that exceed it. Or do you really think they limited the maximum value to 8 if there was 15 available? There is a limit, but it's more like at least 40 for 4 channels or 36 for 3 channels. Edit: and that's for continuous replay. Even if the maximum volume of each of your instruments is 12 (48 if they all occur at the same time) most of the time they will be much lower in total and the '48' impulses make the whole tune more snappy (when/if they occur).

Yeah, there is a matter of taste , and what is actually used for replaying the aimed tune.
