Atari Paddle games - your favorites and recommendations?

Hello fellow Atarians,

I recently acquired "TacScan" by Sega for the 2600 because I'm a big fan of the Atari paddle controllers and shooters. Great game!

I also just ordered "Encounter at L5" by Data Age and it should be arriving shortly. I'm looking forward to playing that.

I own Warlords, Casino (barely a paddle game) and Video Olympics. Warlords is my favorite by far and an absolute classic.

What other paddle games are out there that are "hidden gems" or favorites of yours? Also, which is better, Super Breakout or Breakout? Are those even different games?

Kaboom! And Circus Atari are my faves. Unfortunately I can't keep the jittering from ruining from the game. I'll take the paddles apart, clean them, and they work great once or twice, third and 4th times it starts, after that it's intolerable. I wonder if the paddles that come with the Flashback gold are any more reliable.

Super Breakout is far better than Breakout. The original has a 2 wall limit. Super Breakout has far more play value and variety. Its progressive mode is a really early example of an endless mode. But all modes are excellent and really improve upon the original idea. The only reason to play the original is to try the 4 player modes which are 2vs2 team games. (Super has original mode too with no 2 wall limit - but it's 1 or 2 player only)

Kaboom! is an excellent game.

Medieval Mayhem is Warlords on steroids. Unbelievably good game.

Video Olympics has Quadrapong mode for 4 players - worth a look if you have the controllers and the people.

Circus Atari is a splendid game too - at first glance you might look upon it as a Breakout clone. But it's different enough (and cheap enough) to warrant a look as there are enough differences to make it interesting.

FInally check out Solar Storm - I always go on about this game. It's a 2D vertical shmup by Imagic. It looks and sounds great and has some original ideas for a 2600 game. At first the insta-deaths will annoy you and make you think the game is impossible - but when you bear in mind that enemies can only fire once it makes the game far more interesting.

Can you guess my favorite Paddle Game? (haha) Wish there were more paddle games. I know there's another thread discussing converting some games that would be worthy of paddling. The more paddle games the better IMHO. I really wish Brik was able to play with Paddles.

Circus Atari and of course the 7800 Super Circus Atari are my 2nd place.

Gotta check out Solar Storm still!

I'm going to go out on a limb and say that most paddle games are pretty good, including home-brews of course. Some of my favs include:

Bumper Bash (okay, so this game only uses the fire buttons of both paddles - ha!)

Circus Atari

Demons to Diamonds and Eggomania are good paddle games for the kids

Encounter at L-5

Kaboom!

Medieval Mayhem

Night Driver

Super Breakout

Tac-Scan

Video Olympics

...and I have yet to try it myself, but Marble Craze is supposed to be a lot of fun too.

I actually prefer Breakout to Super Breakout. I like the layout of the playfield better and the sounds. Video Olympics is number two for me as I love all the 4-player variations. After that it is the usuals: Warlords, Circus Atari, and Super Breakout. I was never a big fan of Kaboom and I probably like Blackjack and Eggomania more than most people.

Steeplechase is a fun game with 4 people.

The Sea Bomber options in Canyon Bomber are more enjoyable than the main game mode on that cartridge.

Night Driver - forgot about that one. Good call.

I'll have to give TacScan another try. Kaboom and Circus Atari are my favorites. I didn't enjoy Kaboom as a kid but love it now!

I also prefer Breakout to Super Breakout but wonder if I'm biased since I received Breakout for Christmas when I first got my atari.

Circus Atari is in my Hall of Fame. I'm most fond of variation 3-1, the "breakthru" version. You can really get in the zone on that game.

Kaboom!, Video Olympics, Demons to Diamonds, Warlords, and the Breakout twins are all great games.

Canyon Bomber and Night Driver are fun in small doses. Why didn't Pole Position use the paddles?

I need to try Solar Storm and Tac Scan.

I'm working on a hack of Kaboom! So far I've added game # 3, Pitch and Catch from the 5200 version, as well as the sunset skyline and rainbow logo found in later Activision games. Pitch and Catch is just like game #2, but the other player controls the Mad Bomber.

While I still have some more work to do, it's playable. You can find it in the Kaboom! Deluxe! topic of the Atari 2600 Hacks subform.
