cbmeeks
Call me crazy, but I'd love to track down and purchase a TI-99 Modem. http://www.mainbyte.com/ti99/hardware/modem.html I've always loved acoustic coupler modems and what better system to use one than on the TI? Of course, I haven't had a land-line in about 12 years but why should that stop me? Are those things incredibly rare? Anyone willing to part with one for less money than a used Ford Pinto? +FarmerPotato
They turn up sometimes. I have acquired two TI couplers with big collections. They don't seem to add a premium! I used an (Apple) Novation CAT acoustic coupler with my Geneve for a while. (Hello CAT.. I found you in the garage yesterday while looking for Geneve stuff.) They can even talk to each other through the air, a trick I should bring out again for public demonstration.

I assume you put them in reversed positions pointed at each other?
+FarmerPotato
That would be a neat trick. I assume you put them in reversed positions pointed at each other? No, they just answer across the room. They are susceptible to noise though. For my next trick. My brother spliced two RS232 cables together (minus some signals) so that 2 4As could share one modem. It works and you both read the incoming text, until you both try to type at once.
+9640News
You can also record the audio with the incoming link of the modems and play that back into the speaker of the modem. Did that back in the 80's to capture a friends password to his university computer account. Beery

It is a recording of a 300 baud signal carrying the text of a short story. You play it back into a modem to read the story.
+Vorticon
Lee Stewart sent me one practically brand new a few months ago to test with my novelty handset pictured below. It fits fine in the cups of the modem. I tried it with my cell phone but it did not work well at all. I was able to occasionally connect to The Keep BBS, but it would hang after a few seconds. I think cell phone connections are too flaky to work reliably for data transmission. Fun little experiment though

Fun little experiment though Novelty handset.jpg yeah no.. cell calls don't carry the required frequencies. and compression mangles it..so no easier to use your cell as a bluetooth modem and do it all over tcp

One just popped up on ebay in a lot. Maybe you can contact the seller to see if he/she would consider selling it by itself. HERE

HOME AUTOMATION
Sounds rather inadvertent...Ha! Most music is interesting at one time or another... there was even a time I too appreciated Information Society. Today... I'd rather see/hear the Tx signal Rx'd. I have an original TI modem... however this thread got me to thinking... maybe I could use this for a semi customized transmission mode. If I live long enough... I didn't realize Turtles was yours... I'm sure you're proud! P.S. that cute little turtle hat inspired me to hang the wreath on my L.E.D. matrix!
