Who's going to CGE?

ok this will be my last post on this subject since I figured joe and CGE gang are dead set on moving CGE.

I've been to vegas about so many times and noticed that almost every place (hotels and other wise) have an atm in it.

I haven't been to california but since gambling isn't legal in california I would figure the number of ATM's is smaller then the ones in vegas.

Again I am not aginst the move, as long it's for the good of the show.

And let me say that AVC/JCU does support any gaming event (we do put listings in the fanzine of any show that we know about( we just have to know about it about a month before the show so it can listed on time(that explains why AGE wasn't listed)

it's basicly more family orinated then vegas is.

With no offense meant Dan, that's the poorest excuse for moving the con out of Las Vegas I've heard yet. Considering the cheap cost of airfare, lodging, and food, not to mention all of the free shows and carnival style rides and attractions, Las Vegas may be one of the MOST family oriented cities in the country. They want whole families to come, because tourism generates big bucks too, not just the gambling.

Not a comment on moving CGE but a comment on Vegas from being there this year, and 2 other times in the last 4 yrs:

My first time in Vegas was many, many moons ago before it became "Family"... the hotel shows were very cheap, the food was cheap ($1.50 breakfast buffets, $4 lunch buffets, $6 all you can eat Prime Rib buffets), and VERY good, air fare, lodging... everything was cheap based on the ecomomy and wages for the time. People came, people spent....

Then whomever decided to make Vegas more "family oriented" and everything boomed, as did the price of everything. $6 suppers became $25; $20 shows became $85; rooms at the hotels went from $30 a night to over $100 a night. A ride on the coaster at New York New York is $15. People came, people spent....

But for many, Vegas is missing something. Talk to the cabbies or the local's and you'll hear over and over how Vegas is crap today or Vegas is too expensive or Vegas is ruined with all the "rug rat's" running around. And from some stories I've read in the paper and talking to travel agents, travel and revenue has been down in Vegas over the last few years.

Suddenly someone is deciding that making Vegas "family" oriented might not be the way to go anymore and there is an attempt afoot to return to the older days of Vegas with a more "adult" theme. As evidence, look at the new commercials they are running on TV with the slogan "What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas". Some of the hotels are now beginning to eliminate some of their attractions, like the Dragon vs Wizard encounter at Excaliber. I saw several more "adult" venues on the strip from when I was there the last time.

Just being there this year and seeing the prices for lodging, meals, entertainment (talking about amusements, not shows), etc I don't see how a family can afford to go to Vegas anymore. Hell, even M&M's are $8 a pound and I can buy porterhouse steak cheaper than that in the grocery store :D

I'm not disagreeing with you that Vegas does have family attractions. But I would be willing to bet that a family of four could have a significantly cheaper vaction in Orlando than Vegas.

Just my opinions...

You're probably right. I wasn't going to Vegas in the "old Vegas" days so I haven't seen how cheap it REALLY was. Then again, I found a weekend in Vegas a bargain compared to the same amount of days in New Orleans. I suppose it all depends on what you do, where you go, what you buy, et cetera. And in some ways, the Mrs and I benefit from not having kids, since we don't have to pay for overpriced theme parks and rides or overpriced sit-down family meals. Asi es la vida.

PS: I also found New Orleans to be a +lot+ more seedy than Vegas.

I was mainly speaking from a "family" point of spending... $50 a ticket to Universal or Disney or Sea World for a family of 4 is $200. That's a full day or more of activities (depending on if you do everything available).

If the same family goes to Vegas, the parents can't take the kids onto the casino floors, so they have to put them in the Casino Supervised Day Care Centers (i.e. amusement centers) Take in what the parents spend gambling plus the cost to entertain the youngin's for several hours ($9 a ticket for a 10min 3-D ride simulator, $10 for an IMAX movie, game tokens, etc etc). And if they take the kids to one of the evening "family shows" ... whew! I'm sure the family would easily rack up much more costs than the admission for a day to Disney.

Orlando isn't cheap, don't get me wrong.... I just think for a family its cheaper.

New Orleans is a funny funny town. Walk down Bourbon St and look at the stores.... nice antique furniture shop, porno shop, resturant, porno shop, voodoo shop, porno shop, bar, porno shop... heheheheheheh. Only been there once and glad I went but not sure I'd go back.

Not to veer completely off-topic, but I had the same Bourbon St. experience. We ducked into a store at random to beat the heat and ask for some directions, and when we looked around we noticed it was littered with S&M paraphenalia as far as the eye could see. I was amused, I'm not so sure the Mrs. was. I wanted to sit on their bench for a spell to rest but she kinda made us leave in a hurry.
