So after playing through Treasure Island Dizzy the other night I thought i'd give this a whirl. My first thought is: What a beautiful game and high production value to boot. This is as stunning now as it was when it first came out. My game lasted about 20 minutes; and I got my rear handed to me. So my questions are as follows:

 

1. What is the best (i.e.) easiest character to start with of the four if you are just starting out?

 

2. Is it possible to increase your income in the game? Or can you only do that by conquest? I found it hard to afford more than soldiers and could never afford knights/cavalry or anything higher.

 

3. When i would go to conquest, it would say "you have no army" even though i had 8-12 troops. What qualifies as an army?

 

4. When i would raid castles, it seems like one button is strike, one is block. I couldn't block much. Seemed like i would take an obligatory amount of hits no matter what. Should I be backing up? What is the best way to do this sword-fighting mini-game?

 

5. At a certain point i had to go save a maiden; which i did (it was awesome!) Even brought Robin Hood along with me. but then i was attacked from all sides. A "what is your strategy" window popped up. I was pondering what to do next for all of five seconds when it dissapeared and I lost the game. Didn't realize it was that fast!! When you have seconds to consider on these; what is the best option to pick quickly to try to get a leg up?

 

6. Jousting--never had the money to do this.

 

7. What is your general winning strategy/strategies for this game?

 

Can't wait to give it another few goes and hear from you all as to your thoughts on the various aspects of this beautiful game.

I have been playing Defender of the Crown for a long time, so here is the best advice I can give you:

 

1) Geoffery Longsword - Hes terrible at jousting, but hes good at sword fighting and leading his troops in battle.

 

2) You can increase your income by raiding enemy castles, capturing land and enemy castles, and building additional castles on land you own that dont already have a castle.

 

3) After purchasing your army, you need to transfer the soldiers from the same menu to create your army. Afterwards, you can travel the map by Conquesting.

 

4) Yes, you should back up during the raiding sequences. What works for me is charging the soldier and then backing up to avoid being hit.

 

5) This one is difficult to answer. The decision you make (if I remember correctly) should be based on the size of your army, etc. Dont hold me to it, though.

 

6) Jousting can help you win land without conquesting. You can also joust for fame, which can increase your income. (EDIT: As mentioned earlier, Geoffery is terrible at jousting, so it would be in your best interest to avoid it altogether. If an enemy forces you into a joust, joust for fame only. Its better to lose fame than land!)

 

7) You NEED to purchase as MANY knights as possible. If I remember correctly, one knight is equal to 10-15 soldiers. Also capture land as fast as possible. When you finally have enough gold, purchase a catapult and start sieging enemy castles. You should also protect your own castle(s) by purchasing enough soldiers/knights, and leaving them there. Otherwise, your castles will immediately fall when sieged by the NPC.

I don't even know how to do half of that but i'll give the manual a solid read and play more to get better

All you have to do is aim. No clicking. Vertically and horizontally. Your lance needs to hit the center of the opponent's shield. The better your jousting skill, the more margin for error. Here is the most important detail that everyone seems to fail to mention: Your lance will strike when it is at it's highest point. During the charge, your lance will bounce several times. Pay attention to when it reaches it's highest point because this is where it will be when you and your opponent meet. BAM! You will win every time.
