Welcome to round ten of this 5200 HSC season!  Montezumas Revenge won the poll by three votes. Play using the default settings. Emulation is fine, as are custom controls. Pics preferred, but not required except for HSC wins and records.

The current HSC record for Montezumas Revenge was set by atariksi with a whopping 1,050,300 points.  Bust it if you can for a bonus point!

A link to the ROM and manual can be found here:

I think there are some pretty big differences.. even in the map itself.  Also, isn't the big Montezuma in the A8 version?

<edit> yep look at the bottom left here:

Yeah, a little quick research suggests there are at least two A8 versions, probably more. Unless someone can find a A8 version that is verified to be the same as the 5200 version, I think we will be sticking with the 5200 version.

The 5200 version is more difficult than the A8 one, very challenging because I don't know the way to the exit.

It's really another tunnel system than in other versions like A8 und Colecovision.

One of the best games of that era...

With good weather, my playing time is reduced. Lots of outside house projects going on.

Why is the Atari 8-bit asked for in every single game selection? I know the history of the 5200 and exactly what it is, but especially if you're just going the emulation route, why not just emulate the 5200 game?

265,650 points.  Seems like each level gets darker sooner.  I was on a screen with a torch but couldn't figure out how to get to it (couldn't remember the pattern of where the small platforms were)!

586,250 points.  Got to "Level 10" (the level count only goes up to 9).  Starting at Level 9, there are no torches, you have to go through the levels completely in the dark!

311600.  Played one more time, might be as good as it gets for me.  Level 5 gets hard for me since the enemies don't go away when they get you.  Can't just give up a life to move forward like on level 4.

1,306,100. Couldn't resist this round, great game, a classic! Score rolls around 11:18 mark in the video. Camera stopped on me at 1,048,000. Pic shows final score. Still had plenty of extra Panama Joe's left and probably could have rolled the score a second time. I might put together another video tomorrow.

Wow you guys are way better at MZ than I ever was even at the peak of my gaming skills (early teens)

Question: are you guys using standard 5200 joysticks??  I had to use a Wico whenever I played this game.

I recorded another session last night. My apologies for it being 3 parts, my recording device is old and stops recording after 30 minutes or so. I have studied and rolled the score for the Colecovision Montezuma's Revenge as well so I decided to come out of semi-retirement and try the 5200 version. Here's a walk through of Levels 1-9.Enjoy!
