Please Help!

: Hi everyone. I just received an Atari 800 xl with a 1050 disc drive and am having problems getting some games to work. Games that require warp speed dos won't boot. 1st it said "remove cartridge", I figured out how to solve that problem, but now there's a new problem. It says "remove rom at $C000". If someone knows what the problem is please respond. Thanks *

The ROM at $C000 is the OS (on the XL/XE), which runs from $C000-FFFF (16K). It can be turned off, but it must be done by the software that's running since something else must take control. What is it you're trying to run that says that? Are you talking about Happy's Warp Speed DOS?

I'm trying to run "Happy Warp Speed Dos Version 5.2" - Slow  It  Down, so that I can play the game "M.U.L.E."

When it say ROM and $C000 it could be a game that runs only on the 400/800 series.

To solve this problem you can boot the TRANSLATOR disk. This will disable the original XL/XE OS and loads the 400/800 OS. This works with almost all 400/800 programs.

OK OK...

You have a Happy 1050 drive... Very cool upgrade, but the high speed causes copy protection to break unless you set UNHAPPY mode. You may need a newer version of the happy disk (I've got 7.1, which I can post as an ATR) or to run Translator, which (as stated before) is a program to load the old 400/800 OS into XL/XE computers for software that has problems.

Or, you might want to pick up a stock 1050 just for loading stuff.

im working with joe c trying to figure this thing out. i understand why its not working now and that i basically have two options. When you say you can post Happy Warp Speed Dos 7.1 as an ATR, what does that mean?

also, i understand what the Translator program does, but i dont think we have one and i have never used one before. Is it a floppy disk like warp speed? and how can i get a translator program if i dont have one?

by the way, the game we're trying to play is M.U.L.E. anybody still play that one? or my favorite, Floyd of the Jungle?

I think he means that he can post a zipfile here that contains a disk image of the Happy Dos...which you can download and then send to your Atari computer by using a SIO2PC adapter (which is still sold here at AA's store). You can use that method to make your own floppy disk to use with the drive...as well as the thousands of disks that you can download and play right on your Atari computer.

BTW I thought Happy drives are switchable (toggle a switch to use the drive as a stock 1050)?

Mule is still very popular! An ATR file is a disk image, that can be used to make an 8-bit disk. If you'd like me to mail you disks for Happy software and Translator, send me an email at bryede@yahoo.com, and I'll mail it right out.

My happy 1050 has a switch on the front that you can use to select Slow or Fast mode. I believe that I have to select slow mode for MULE.

Does your happy have this switch? If not, you may think about either getting one installed, getting a stock 1050 drive or doing the SIO2PC thing (very easy if you have a spare PC computer or an old laptop.)

  • 2 weeks later...

Bryede,

you are the man. the disks work and we are playing MULE, finally. we've waited years to play the original again. we used the cracked version of MULE first, but when my cousin caught a mountain wampus it froze up. so we used the translator and the original version of MULE that we used to play all those years ago. it took some playin with, but its workin now and we are deadlocked in 1-1 tie, though i stomped my cousin thouroughly today.

thanks for all the help.

Bedtime for Bonzoid

It was bedtime for Joe C. and gullamer today.  Spheroid is a G.  9

could someone remind me what each players specialty is in M.U.L.E.  i know packer produces a lot food, but i cant remember the rest.   under spheriods description it says something about not liking corners or squares, but i didnt really understand.

Glad to hear all is well. I found that copy of MULE on the net, but I didn't really test it out. I have an original, but I remember that many of the cracked copies my friends had were flaky. Oh well...

Take care!

One quick question, I have an Atari 800 xl, and when I start up M.U.L.E. and it's on the screen " press your buttons to go on ", it presses the button for player 4 right away. There is no player 4. On an 800 that would be no problem but in are case it is. Now when I hold the button on the second paddle and someone holds the start button pauses it and it dosn't press player 4.

Why does this happen and how can it be fixed?

I'm not exactly sure what's happening but I'll boot up MULE later and see what happens. As far as I know, computer players always press their buttons immediately (if you select 2 players, then the computer will press the other 2 buttons itself). I'll go look.
