andylama
Hi folks, I need a recommendation. What are the favored reference books for Assember (namely Atari Macro Assembler)? I dabbled in 6502 assembly MANY MANY years ago, so I do have a feel for the syntax and structure. I guess I'm looking for a good all-around reference work for "a beginner who already has a clue". Suggestions appreciated Andy

Bryan
The 3 books I make use of mostly are Mapping the Atari, the Atari Hardware Manual, and Programming the 6502 by Rodnay Zaks. Mapping the Atari is a great reference, but Ian Chadwick's lack of technical skill show through in places, where he simply repeats material from other sources without giving any further explaination. For this reason, I keep the Hardware manual nearby, which is dry reading, but has some good technical info. I copied the instruction reference pages out of Programming the 6502, and I refer to them often. I program on the PC, and send my assembled code to the 8-bit. This could be done with APE, but I'm doing it with a custom cable to the joystick port and a custom 1-sector loader program (faster). Also, many of us here could help you get started. -Bry

Wrathchild
Certainly the Zaks Programming the 6502 was a great help for me, plus the Compute's 1st and 2nd books of Atari Graphics programming had a few useful machine related examples. Get hold of De-Re-Atari too. Regards, Mark
andylama
Folks, Thanks much for the references. Surely everything I'll need! I also joined the yahoogroup...although I am so painfully rusty with 'tha 6502 skillz' that it is bound to be a while before I have anything to contribute...except maybe bad mnemonic puns (J/K! Don't ban me!! It's a joke!) Thanks again, guys andy
