"Lost prototypes" finally to be released?

Recommended Posts

From MyAtari's current "Super Pac-Man" eBay auction:

We have Commando, Midi Maze, Xenophobe, Mat Mania, Bruce Lee, Picnic Paranoia, ETC in the works. The games were completed by Atari and scheduled to be released under the XE label. They will not work on the original Atari Proto Test cartridge and require a special Super Cartridge board like the XE Games come on. Hope to have time to release them soon.

Not that "Bruce Lee" and "Picnic Paranoia" (huh?) haven't been released already, but still...

Someone at AGE (don't remember who exactly) told me about MIDI Maze having been recently found. I'm dumbfounded as to why Atari developed it for the A8 and called it MIDI Maze, but I would REALLY like to see it! I'm wondering if it supports networking, and how. BTW, any of you familiar with Maze of Agdagon (sp?)? Not sure if that name is right, but it's similar to MIDI Maze and supported networking through the joystick ports.

I think MIDI Maze has been "out there" for some time now. Also Commando, Xenophobe, Mat Mania Challenge, Mean 18 among others.

It would be fun to find a Picnic Paranoia cartridge with a 1987 or 1988 copyright... So, after Epyx, Electronic Arts, Broderbund Software, it seems Atari bought the rights to Synapse Software and Datasoft games. Talk about being cheap...

How about some more speculation on unreleased software? Maybe I'm being optimistic but I assume these titles exist (or have existed) in a more or less finished form:

Access

- 10th Frame

Atari

- Elevator Action

- Jungle River Cruise

- Pole Position II

- Sinistar

- TumbleWeeds

- Warlords

- educational titles

Electronic Arts

- Adventure Construction Set

- Skyfox

LucasFilm Games

- Labyrinth

Romox

- many...

Some of those games are, indeed, out there -- but I'm just pleased that they'll see a general release instead of remaining in the hands of individual collectors (who are most welcome to their protos. ) :)

Hopefully we'll get some screen shots and details on the specifics of these titles.. People tend to hoard information about XEGS and 7800 prototypes like a Doberman with a raw steak. Wish people that had access to these prototypes were open like Lynx, Jaguar, 5200 and 2600 fans. :-(

I wanna see the 7800 Electrocop and the XEGS version of MIDI MAZE!!! :)

I can say that I've personally seen MIDI Maze and Mean 18, and I have good info on a few of the others on that list. Unfortunately I don't own any of these so I can't release them (or I would). Hopefully they will be at the very least reviewed soon as it would be nice to at least see pictures of these games.

I know one problem that's holding up a few of them is that they use some kind of strange XE board (a regular board and a daughter card of some type I think), which is hard to dump.

PP II, Elevator Action and Sinistar - Anyone ahve screenshots or any more info on these!

Pole Position II and Elevator Action were in some late Atari catalogs and also announced by Datasoft. I have Elevator Action as RX8070. I saw Sinistar mentioned in another catalog, don't remember where...

Id like to see more about Xenophobe also ;)

There was a review of this unreleased version in Atari Explorer. I have it as RX8118 (MIDI Maze is RX8124).

What do you mean when you say "reviewed"?

I remember Commando has this special board.

I recall hearing about "Midi Maze" at a meeting of TAF (Toronto Atari Federation) in the early '90s, and know that people were distributing it in the club at that time. Could Atari Canada have received advance copies of some games and released them locally in small quantities?

Hi,

just my 2c:

1) The 'daughter board' is nothing special - just a replacement of 128k EPROM fitting into Atari ROM socket. Dumping should be as easy as dumping standard XEGS cartridge - see my pages how to do it (shameless plug :D )

2) Re listing some proto RX numbers. See my pages for _almost_ complete list of Atari cartridges, including these (another shameless plug :D )

3) Midi Maze got it name from the Midi<->Midi comm interface (MIDIMATE). I was said (and the menu shows it) that it allowed comm with the big brother (read ST version). It also allows playing on XM301, SX212 and a generic R: handler and also a solo mode.

Never noticed you had all the serial numbers! Where did you get that list from?

From a friend. Thank you again, friend! :D :D :D

Still missing:

CXL4014 (unreleased Mailing List?)

CXL4017

CXL4023

RX8027 (Berzerk?)

I was told that Mailing List is a cassette of CX4014 serial (hint, hint, nudge, nudge ;)

Other's are unknown until proved otherwise.

Ok I must be blind because I dont see the RX numbers in a nice list on your page.

Yes I believe that the cassette number got mixed up with the cartridge number. Given the nature of the program (create and store addresses) why would Atari put it on cartridge? They would had to add some kind of battery to store the data or require a tape. It would make more sense to release it as a disk or tape (which they did).

To make the navigation easier I need some input - where did you get lost? :)

It's HOME -> Atari -> Dumping Project -> 4th (or so) link from the bottom (called List of Atari Carts).

CXL4014 - Unknown I agree this is an obvious mixup with the mailing cassette which makes no sense as cart.

CXL4017 - Unknown

CXL4023 - Probably Bezerk I agree with Digital Press on this. By time frame, its the only number it can be.

CXL4027- :? This is QIX, a released game. :?
