APX

When I got my 800, I got a lot of magazines and manuals. I got an APX catalog along with it. Man, this was a really cool idea! It would be neat to try this again, seeing as so many people still use thier old 8-bits.

Did anyone ever know someone who developed a game for APX (or tried?)

Excellent, I hadn't seen that before! I just bookmarked the site for when we put an Atari 8-bit section online. I especially like how they have Mapping the Atari online. That was an invaluable book when I was programming the 8-bit.

APX is something that can't really happen again because modern games require large teams and large budgets so the efforts of individuals can never really make it onto the store shelves.

However, certainly shareware and open source largely serve the concepts of APX. I think sites like MP3.com that aggregate grass-roots artists and offer low-run CD publishing are very close in spirit--within that other medium.

I was hoping to do something similar to that for videogames with a domain I purchased "GameDevelopers.Net" but I couldn't think of a decent business model. Making games, even small ones, is a more laborious effort than music recording. So it's harder to aggregate a lot of content.

Really, if you want to release a game, it's not that expensive to do so using mailorder/online distribution. The big publishers don't have to get involved at any point anymore.
