XEGS Vs JESS

Recommended Posts

When I recieved my XEGS in the mail I was all excited and all about it. I looked on the back and seen TV and MONITOR of course, I dont have an 8bit monitor so I used the RF signal which I really hated cause its just soo lame. After 2 MONTHS I looked at the back of it and said, I prolly could just use some COMPOSITE cords in there, It might work. So I plug em in a LOW AND BEHOLD IT _IS_ composite! I felt like such a dope for living with RF this whole time....

AAAAAAAAAAAARRRGGH!

Atari-Jess, you clever Whelp! When I read your post, it reminded me of when I got my XEGS aprox a year ago. The first thing I noticed was that it didn't have an RGB monitor port (like my 130XE), I had even ordered an extra monitor cable for it (the 9-din kind).

So, sadly I hooked it up through the RF switch. That was a year ago. Then I read your post and said "what monitor port??" I just looked at the back of my XEGS and said "oh no!" (I has originally been looking for the Din-pin one of course). So I pull out an RCA cable, hook it up and Lo! Nice composite signal, no need to swap feeds with my 7800 and use that nasty RF switch.

So, don't feel bad that you never noticed it. If you hadn't posted here I'd still be in RF hell. I think the XEGS is going to be getting a lot more use now!

What kills me is that you're like what 15? I'm 31, been into atari from the start. I am humbled. The student becomes the master. You learn well Grasshopper. Hai.

If you think the Atari 8-bit display looks good without composite outputs, then you should get a cable that splits the chroma and luminance outputs, which is effectively S-Video. This eliminates dot crawl and results in a much sharper picture overall. Hook this up to something like a Commodore 1702 or a television with S-Video inputs and you'll be in heaven.

Albert: are you saying there is an S-video cable for the 8-bits? I've got a monitor cable, but it is just 3 RCA plugs. Is there something that will convert that?
