MrRetroGamer
I recently posted this in another forum, but perhaps more people would find it helpful here. There is a site at http://www.archive.org where you can find, among other things, archives of the PBS show "Computer Chronicles". Their holdings are freely downloadable. There are several episodes from the earlier years of this show (mid 1980's) that deal with Atari computers. Hopefully people will find these interesting. Enjoy! Man I used to love the computer cronicals, they used to be on TV each weekend and they had a radio show on at 9pm every (I think) Saturday night.... that was a great show, no biased reviews, they really would just speak about the systems and not put down other systems and such.... they did love the Mac a lot though, they almost always had a Mac demonstration on the show, thanks for the refresher of my memories :-) Curt
LoTonah
I really don't know what's wrong with my machine. Doesn't like those clips at all...MPEG2 says "Class not found" on Windows Media Player, DIVX won't touch it. MPEG4 won't open on Windows Media Player, Quicktime and DIVX play the video but no sound. Funny thing is that other videos play fine. WHY DOES THEIR HAVE TO BE 18,000 different freakin' codecs?????!?!?
belboz
MrRetroGamer, Thanks for the heads up. I loved seeing the old episode where they compared the Amiga and ST. LoTonah, I downloaded a couple episodes where they didn't have an audio track. In some cases I could download the editable version and it had video and audio. In the case of the above mentioned Amiga/ST episode, I had to download the 1.X GB MPEG2 file because the others lacked audio.
MrRetroGamer
I'm glad a few of you found the link interesting! There is an epsiode from 1984 where Steve Kitchen does a demo of his Space Shuttle game for the VCS on a real 2600! There is also an episode from 1985 where Jack Tramiel himself talks about things going on at.......ATARI! Gotta see those! As far as the actual clips and playing them are concerned, I had some trouble myself with them. I finally figured out a not-so-easy way to make them into VCDs so I could watch them thru the DVD player on my television.
mos6507
I thought CC always was biased in the sense that it debuted around the time of the original IBM PC. It was really an industrial show, so it was largely about trends in the industry from a business angle. They tended to favor talk regarding computer use in the workplace rather than the home. While they did do some shows on games it was largely reflective of what they felt "serious" computing was all about. You know, spreadsheet demos on amber monitors on DOS boxes, boring crap like that. There were exceptions, of course. They did one feature on the state of CAD-CAM at the time that covered the Atari ST which I thought was pretty cool. But overall I think they tended to act a little elitist and puffy and they made too many editorial pronouncements about which companies or products were "viable" or not. There is an epsiode from 1984 where Steve Kitchen does a demo of his Space Shuttle game for the VCS on a real 2600! I watched this episode last night and it's pretty cool. Not only was Steve Kitchen on it, they also interviewed Chris Crawford, Bill Budge and Trip Hawkins (president of Electronic Arts at the time).
