its a 10 or 15 cart.id

Huh? Okay I'll take 10 or 15 of them

T.skid, its an old catalog. None of the vendors have Crystal Castles in stock. Expect to pay a good price for one. If Atari70s was trying to say $10-$15, thats too low. That auction will go at least $25 and probably more.

Yes, Pete, give us the scoop. Were you thinking of Choplifter? That has two versions. Mario Bros. also had a version that was never released but was widely available. Those are only two XE carts that I remember as different versions. Many others were pretty much the same as the earlier disks (Hardball,One-on-one etc.)

I've heard of the second Mario Bros. What's the difference between the two? There's also a beta of Crystal Castles out there somewhere, it's probably what the 5200 version would have looked like instead of the spiffy XE version. I bet there's a 5200 looking version of Battlezone out there too.

I hope I didn't give you the wrong idea, only one version was released. However I have a version on disc that I had years before they released the cart. Its complete and a great with a trackball. It may be that beta/5200 version you are talking about. I got it at the same time I got Super-Pacman, probally around 1985. I could never figure out why these 2 games went un-released. I think Jr. Pac-Man, and Xevious were on the same disc. Maybe at the time Atari did not have access or know about this version and started a new version. I wonder if this is why there are 2 Mario Bros. versions?

I downloaded ATR's of a Crystal Castles and Crystal Castles 2; I can't see any difference at all between them, I thought one was the 5200 hack. Is the XE cart of CC any different than the original 8-bit version?

You mean that this version was better than the "official" cartrige?

About 48k. The first 16K version was scheduled for release in 1984 and cancelled. I think it showed up on the BBSs, but wasn't very good. Looked like 2600 graphics, IIRC. Don't have it, but the binary might be around somewhere. Perhaps it just completely disappeared given that the later version is great.

Pete - good info on CC.

If t was 16K it probably looked like the 5200 version. There were alot of games that were released for the 5200 that had unreleased 8-bit ports (since they were almost the same hardware they were developed at the same time). I saw a master part list that had a lot of these types of games on it in the lower numbers and again in the XE number range (where the upgraded versions were released).

The ones I can think of are:

Mario Bros.

Crystal Castles

Battlezone

Last Starfighter/Star Raiders II

Food Fight

I'm not sure about these, but I'd bet they were originally planned earlier on.

Ballblazer

Rescue on Fractalus

Desert Falcon

I really need to look at that list again. I remebber reading it and thinking that it was odd that a few carts were listed twice. Alot of the ones in the XE range were never released though.

if its cart only i dont think it would be much more than 15$ on ebay unless a biddng war or if someone really wanted it. if you search around im sure you could get it cheaper. for as numbers i have a list in a manual i know Final Legacy is like 8067 with a silver label like the early ones. so im thinking Xe starts in the 8070s. 8079 is food fight with a XE label yet 8080 (silver style old label with a red in stead of silver) so i dont know what it is with that cart but i have to dig out the note book. the XE numbers run from RX-8070s to RX8125. they didnt go higher than RX-8125 unless it was those casettes but taht was more the 800 series ones.

I haven't player either verision lately but I seem to remember the 16k version (dated 1984) as being a great port. When I got the XE cart I wondered why all the extra memory was needed as the game didn't seem much better. Buy the way has a 5200 version ever surfaced ? I don't think it has.

I was playing around with the Atari arcde package on my son's Dreamcast ($9.99 at Best Buy) and there was no mention of a 5200 or 8-bit port. They show boxes and screenshots of other 5200 games the were not released.

Bezerk

Vanguard

Kangaroo

Gremlins

Space Dungeon

Pete,

Here's what I know...

Berzerk - exists as a prototype. Not listed on Atari's master part list.

Vanguard - Not listed. No proto known.

Kangaroo - RX8074. exists as a proto.

Gremlins - RX8073. No proto known.

Space Dungeon - Not listed. No proto known.

Last I saw, B&C sold copies of Berzerk and Kangaroo.

Hope that helps,

John

Space Dungeon exists in disk format I believe.

Gremlins may exist, I'll ask John Seghers next time I talk to him (he did the 5200 version). This may exist on disk somewhere as well.

RS Soccer does exist. John Seghers told me he has it on one of those huge 10" floppies.

Xevious was also listed on the parts list I believe yet no proto exists.

Tempest probably exists somewhere too

Kangaroo was released!

On Disc by Atari, when Jack cleared house it was in those big stock dumping ads they put in Antic and Analog - a mate bought a copy, it only works on the 400/800

Mario Brothers was re-written by Sculptured Software for the XE and is HUGELY better than the old 5200 version.

Many of the 5200 games that did not appear on the 8bit were restricted in their licences too, so although developed Atari could not publish them on console/computer - hence no 5200 Donkey Kong!
