Falcon Question

Recommended Posts

I posted awhile back that I had an accident that damaged my Falcon beyond repair. I was able to find a replacement that is performing without flaw.

But I just remembered that on my other Falcon I had some files in the Auto folder and as .ACC's that fixed a couple bugs (a folder bug is one, I believe) in the TOS. Since the HD was damaged on my other Falcon I can't get into it to look at what files I had on the C drive and my senile mind is drawing a blank.

Can anyone give a list of what programs **SHOULD** be on the Falcon to correct any bugs, etc with TOS? I've got a lot of Falcon disks with plenty of util's, games, productivity programs, etc (all zip'd) and I'm sure I can get any programs I need off of these. But any names that you can suggest would be greatly appreciated as it will help me in my search thru these disks.

Thanks in advance!

The only bug fix program I know of is FPATCH2.PRG, which I believe is a patch that fixes a bug with the Falcon accessing external devices. What version of TOS is in your new Falcon?

Thanks, Sauron!

I thought there was a bug in the folder count (or something like that) and there was a patch for it but I could be thinking of something else.

Believe TOS version is 4.04; I'll have to fire it up to confirm.

I think the "folder" bug is even in the newest TOSes, but if you use HDDriver, you don't need the patch because HDDriver can patch TOS for you.

Thanks for the reply, Krupkaj!

I'm not using HDDriver, unfortunately. I'm using ICD software.

I've heard a lot of good things about HDD but since the ICD has never given me a problem I've had no reason to switch. Maybe sometime in the future I will find a copy and give it a try.

Thanks again!

Okay.. think there are only three files I needed that I used on my other Falcon:

FPatch2

Bmapfix2

Speakoff

Not sure if anyone else uses them or if there are any other programs that you put in the AutoFolder or run as a .CPX.

Thanks to all for your responses!

I assume Speakoff disables the internal speaker? If so, where can I get it from?

if you have a tos4.04 you don't need fpatch2

fpatch2.zip

Fixes two problems in the Falcon BIOS (TOS 4.00-4.04)                           (Sound & Bconmap() doesn't work correctly)

05-Jul-93/hesche

The Mega STe supports devices 6, 7, and 9 as Modem 1, Modem 2, and Serial 2

respectively. Reliable use of BIOS serial devices other than the ST compatible

device #1 on a Falcon030 requires the use of the TSR program "FPATCH2.PRG"

(available from Atari Developer Support) or a TOS version > 4.04.

The Falcon030 requires "FPATCH2.PRG" or an installed TOS version greater than 4.04

for Bconmap() to work as expected.

] Bmapfix2 was include on Fpatch2, you don't need it

Speakoff  if you use fgeneral.cpx you don't need it

Thanks very much, Protos!!

Out of curiosity, I'm only using general.cpx; is the fgeneral.cpx you mentioned a different program? I was not aware of it.

I ran Speakoff because the doc's said this:

The ATARI Falcon 030 has got a built-in speaker which produces very

loud and terrible sounding output after the computer is powered on

(why such a small mono-speaker for the F030...) You are able to switch

it off using GENERAL.CPX, but this won't have any effect on programs in

the AUTO-folder (because GENERAL.CPX is called by the desktop).

So SPEAKOFF is a (very) little programm for the AUTO-folder that

switches the internal speaker of the F030 off. When the SHIFT-key is

pressed, SPEAKOFF will not influence the speaker. The program

BOOTSOFF.PRG allows you to install a bootsector with the same routine

on a disk. Just select on which drive (if you have more than one) you

want to install the SPEAKOFF-bootsector, and BOOTSOFF will do it for

you. But don't forget that you can't install it on disks that already

have an executable bootsector without destroying the old one (BOOTSOFF

will warn you in that case)!

Didn't know about the fgeneral.cpx.

Thanks again!

fgeneral = general.cpx

but I have removed the internal speaker on the stock f030, I have take the

place for a 3"5 ide hdrive

on the f030/ct060 on the tower I have removed the speaker too ;)

but the best way is to use a boot manager how include this option

I use stoop boot manager (f030 only), it could switch off the infamous internal

speaker on the boot conf ;)
