Malix
I have read that a sega genesis controller will work with a 2600 without any modifications. Since the controllers I recieve with my atari are very "sticky" and one will not go down at all is this true. If so are they good to play with or should I purchase some newer controllers?? Scooterb23
While I use Genesis controllers for most of my Atari gaming, I definitely think using the real controllers give the best overall gaming experience. I find that I am better on some games (Pac-Man, Pitfall, other twitch games) with the Genesis controller, but games that need a lighter touch (Enduro, Pole Position, Centipede) I like the real thing. Just try them both out and se which you like better.
Joel D. Park
Make sure you get Genuine Genesis controllers and not after market ones, I had an after market controller and the directons and stuff are all messed up. I found the Genesis controllers to be incredibly sensitive, I still like the old style joysticks better, but when friends come to play games, most seem to like the genesis ones. Ian Primus
The genesis controllers work just fine, but in my humble opinion, the D-pad just can't give the precise directional control that is needed for Pac-man, Ms. Pac-man, Surround, and many others. I really like the actual Atari joysticks, but I also have a controller I built myself from left over arcade parts, that is really good too. J-DEE
Do the genesis contollers just plug in or is there some type of modification required? Do they fit the Atari plug holes? If its just plug and play, I'll have to give that a try. [ 06-20-2001: Message edited by: J-DEE ]
Joel D. Park
They just plug right in.. The Genesis controllers have 3 buttons so the center one is your actual fire button for the atari. They really work well.
J-DEE
Cool, I'll have to give that a try!!! Now I just have to pick up a cheap Genesis for the controllers.
Ian Primus
One interesting thing is that the Genesis works with Atari controllers, with the exception of the lack of buttons on the Atari controllers. I have Ms. Pac Man for Genesis, and I really couldn't play it very well with a D-pad, so I found that if I started the game with the genesis controller, and swapped to the Atari controller as the game started, I could play with my little black Atari joystick. Joel D. Park
I'd be afraid, The masterplay is too expensive to test with later.
Tempest
I've got one and I'll test it when I get home (unless someone else beats me to it). Funny thing is when I got it I was all happy because I thought it was going to fix all my joystick problems. Now I find out I almost never use it, I guess after years of playing the games with a 5200 joystick it just feels more natural. And with games the need it (like Miner) I just play it on my Atari XE. JagDiesel
has anyone came up with an adapter to hook up a Jaguar controller to a 5200? I've seen one to use it on the 2600 and 7800.. just wonderin...
Ugclone
in my opinion the jag controller was one of the nicest controllers i have ever used..not only are they supre comfortable but the work well..having one set up to work with the 5200 would be awesome..it has the punch pad and enough buttons to make me toss the 5200 controllers immediatly aside..i wonder if there are any modifications you could do to make them work on a 5200..hmmm.... Tempest
What would happen if you plagged a Genesis controller into the 5200 via the Masterplay interface? Would either of the extra buttons work as the second button? I doubt it (I know the 7800 controller doesn't do that) but I think it would still be interesting to try.
