Here's an area that's full of potential and could just drive you crazy: Brazilian bootlegs.

There's gotta be thousands of them.

The key manufacturers (from what I've gathered) seem to be: Dactar, Tron, Microsoft (not Bill's), Digitel and CCE, but there are countless others.

Not to mention the authorized Polyvox cartridges that encompass both Atari and Activision titles.

The coolest boots are the many, many multi-carts - most from Dactar.

This is an area I'm trying to get into (if only the ones I won on eBay would arrive!)

You're absolutely right, the Brazilian market rocks the Atari world. As I understand, there were very, very small 'factories' (more like, people assembling carts at their kitchen table) producting carts. You will find the weirdest labels and game combinations, like X-Man (or Sex Man, as many of 'em are called) with Custer's Revenge or Lady in Wading on one cart. If you're into collecting boxed games, you'll love Brazil also: most of their boxes are just big enough to fit in a 2600 cart.

The hardware is even weirder. They made two superchargers: the Canal-3 that resembles the Starpath version and the Comp-K7 that looks more like a Commavid cart. They put almost everything on tape: Battlezone, Snoopy and the Red Baron, Raiders of the lost Ark, you name it, it's probably on tape in Brazil somewhere.

They had their own compumate-like keyboard, from Dactar. And, dig this, they had their own Gameline service! It's called Telegame. It consists of a supercharger-like device that plugs into the 2600, that you hooked up to a real modem! Everything was packed in a cool briefcase, reading 'top secret' - how cool can it get?!

Besides the many (50+!) multicarts and the keyboard, Dactar also made a suitcase system: a 2600 built into a plastic suitcase.

And there's plenty more other goodies. You gotta be stupid *not* to collect this mesmerizing stuff

Cheers,

Marco

PS: Australia is another country that produced way cool 2600 stuff (how about multi-carts with built-in LEDs to indicate which game is playing?!)

Marco-

How have you become so tied in to the Brazilian Market? (I'm searching for your secrets here...)

I've tried numerous times to propose trading to Bazilian Atari enthusiasts, and mostly they seem more anxious to sell on eBay rather than trade. Any hints or contacts you'd like to share?

(... I had to try.)

How about trying to really complete your collections of specific companies. Choose a manufacturer, and give all your effort into collecting all their games - complete with box and manual. This can be really tough, even for the more common companies! (I think the only company I have totally complete is Epyx - and they only released 3 games!)

I just lately started collecting Zellers Carts, thanks to a couple friends from Canada. I'm not down to only needing a couple more.

Also, I love the NTSC Pirate Imports. (Cooper Black), Tawan A.. The poor english on the back of the box is classic, I have devoted an entire section of my web site to these games, and I am constantly looking on ebay for these. Ya gotta have the box though or they aren't so cool.

Heheh

I think it's mostly about building up a network, really getting to know people. Learn what they are interested in, and set out to find that stuff. I trade with about a dozen or so Brazilian collectors; and, as you noticed, Ebay is a good source too (I'd say it's not the best source for the real nice stuff though).

Hmm, scrolling back, I don't think I've told you anything new. I guess it's not really a secret either: invest time and care into longlasting relationships - and some good ole $$ will do the rest

Good luck tracking down those cool Brazil games!

Cheers,

Marco

Have you considered collecting for other systems as well? With the amount of ColecoVision and Intellivision stuff I see out there while looking for Atari stuff, I have to try picking up at least some of it. If Coleco and INTV don't ring your bell, try something more rare like the Microvision or the Adventurevision (Sheesh, these all end in -vision for some reason).

If you're against leaving the Atari domain, you could try the Lynx or Jaguar (if you haven't already), or even the 400/800/XL or ST computers.

Hi people some real great suggestions out there. i think ill adress them one by one.

1.) the thought of goign company by company. i have started on that. like you mentioned the EPYX i got the 3 from there. also i moved into mthlogic i think its called hold on ill check the cart MYTHICON. i have all 3 of them. the Avalon hill is almost done with 2 more to go of the 5 releases. activision is almost done ( however i need blue labels and also i need the international editions alos. anythoughts into how i can get into the brazilian market im open for ideas cause im BIG fan of POLYVOX and CCE carts but people on ebay want 7 to 15 for no offence filler carts that look like something the cat dragged in. however i did get one nice untorn label (realsports tennis) by polyvox in.

2 the over seas (PAL market). im in the USA and also on top of the POLYVOX carts i want to tap in the GERMAN dept. they were like 2nd in popularity to the usa with australia close in 3rd. However i dont have connections to these place ( GERMANY ) and dont know the language and im not sure how to.

i have thought of going for holy grail carts. i have a few now. i got Gas Hog coming in for $25.00 a steal on ebay which looks to be mint. cart only how ever.

i mighnt get a 2nd one inthe mail ( so its a catch 22 to you all who mayu be interested in a gas hog cart

So for the out of the USA carts i dont know what to do you people deal in that stuff and maybe want to do trading . im open to that i also dont mind giving up a rare cart for another if i feel comfortable about able to get anopther one.

ok guys ill leave you wiht this thought besides doign trades ( you can always email me at either braves1545@aol.com or atari70s@aol.com) I was thinking about PROTOYPES who knows how many varations are of proto types ( besides hwo far the game has been programed ( for as chips and cases and factory labels)

talk to you soon

PS. im getting a Minature Golf CX-2626 cart in the mail with a PICTURE label how is that for a find?

There's lunatics out there with 1000+ games in their collections...

Don't worry, if you keep on going long enough you'll get there; there are probably over 3000 different 2600 games out there, not even counting label variations.

Cheers,

Oh yeah, I do believe this is the case. In working on the Digital Press Guide (check out the awesome Atari 2600 "import" section) my friend Roloff has built up a database of 1600+ games (I am talking about manufacturer variations here).

We are not even close to having all Brazilian, Australian and Taiwanese games in there. I see non-listed games on an almost daily basis. So I guess it's a safe bet to say that we will have 3000+ listed in that database, some day...

Cheers,

Marco

Are you going to the CGE 2001 Marco?

Hi Matt,

Nope, I won't be there. I only attended the 1999 edition. I would love to go but I'm such a bad planner that I always end up being too late to book affordable flights. I tried last Saturday but they only had some business class seats left..

Maybe next year...

Cheers,

Marco

Man, it's going to take me forever to get up to even 75 carts. You see, I am still only fourteen years old, and parents say I have enough video games as it is. This is probably true, as I do have an Atari 2600, ColecoVision, NES, Game Boy, Game Boy Color, SNES and a Nintendo 64(which is busy collecting dust right now). Where do you guys get all these carts anyway for a low price? (i.e. not 4Jays or Best Electronics)
