Snider-man
It's a real simple web page just giving you a taste of my next game release (though we're talking middle next year release at best). For a small taste of Atari 2600 gaming horror, check it out: http://www.geocities.com/gameagain_2000/risen.html I'll be updating the page as I progress with screenshots, progress reports and playable demos. Wanted to get this set up before I left for Labor Day vacation. Tim Snider "MST3K, HQ, Blair, Venture II"

I'm glad to see that all the garbage you had to endure over Venture II (great game, by the way!) hasn't stopped your homebrewing interests! My guess is that it's along the lines of Resident Evil for the 2600 Maybe it'll hang out with Halloween and Texas Chainsaw Massacre. --Zero

Chuck Gill
Tim, I can't wait to see what you come up with. Survival Horror games are my favorite modern games. Just started RE Veronica X, so far it's the same as the DC. Save a cart for me. -Chuck

Snider-man
Yes, I know the serial number already exists. I just glommed onto the label for illustrative purposes. Moving on... The label I did for the A1FLC several years back prompted the concept of "They've Risen." There was also a game out in the late 1980s for the C64 called "Zombies" that inspired me. As for a gameplay desription, well, that's just gonna have to wait. I'm working on it as we speak and the web site will be updated as the game progresses. But, for now, it's my own little secret. But let's say that the game is your basic "you vs. legions of undead with big firearms" gameplay. But there's much more in store. Stay tuned... Joel D. Park
The concept label is AWESOME. I can't wait until your next game release. Quick Question for you Tim. Did you know how to program in Assembler before you started or did you learn Atari 2600 assembler just by messing with games and looking at the info on the internet and stuff?? Snider-man
quoteQuick Question for you Tim. Did you know how to program in Assembler before you started or did you learn Atari 2600 assembler just bymessing with games and looking at the info on the internet and stuff?? Well, before I became a mild-mannered reporter, I majored in computer programming/analysis at OSU. I learned all the languages: Pascal, Fortran, Cobol, etc. I even learned a smattering of assembly, but it wasn't really stressed back then and I bailed before I got too much deeper. To cut to the chase: I learned how to tinker with animated sprites with Mystery Science Theater 2600 (my first "hack). I then played with coming up with a decent game concept with HozerQuest: Thrifting Simulation. My third hack, The Blair Witch Project, was done as a lark. My most recent game, Venture II, was a "re-building/re-imagining" of the original Coleco game. I actually did mess with the code to re-do the rooms. I altered every sprite, including the scoring system. With this game, I was slowly re-introducing assembly language back into my psyche. Plus, I built all of the carts by hand, so this taught me how the board, chip, etc. went together. I considered it a crashcourse in hardware as well as yet another baby-step in learning Atari 2600 programming. Finally, "They've Risen" is a game I've been working on for the last year and a half. I had the game half-way coded (a working playfield and animated sprites - real basic stuff though) when a major computer crash dumped it all. And, stupid me, no notes existed because I just didn't see the crash coming. The game's been slow in the re-build though. I've read every 2600 programming web site out there, and there are a lot of good ones. I also picked up "Assembly Language: Step-by-Step" which has been invaluable. This may be more info than you need, so to answer your question in 10 words or less: "I knew assembly, but I'm refreshing my memory." +-^CrossBow^-
Snider? where are from? I am trying to figure out which university you are speaking of when you mentioned OSU? If your close to where I think you are...then I may have to pay you a visit and pick me up a Venture 2 sometime...hehe.. And perhaps get a heads up sneak at your new current project!!! StanJr
Hey Snider! In your opinion which programming websites were the most accessible and useful to learn from?
+johnnywc
Sounds like a great project! It's fantastic to hear about NEW games being made for the 2600... BTW - wasn't Zombies also called Realm of Impossibility at one point, or am I thinking of another game?
Snider-man
quote BTW - wasn't Zombies also called Realm of Impossibility at one point, or am I thinking of another game? Wow, I had RoI, but I could never remember the name of the game until now. Thanks for filling in a "memory hole." However, that wasn't the game. No, "Zombies" was one of those little-known jobbers you could download from the local bulliten boards when that was all the internet that existed ("You have a 1200 Baud modem? You lucky dog!") I've never run across the game since then and I really wish I had kept my extensive collection of floppies.
