Who owns Gauntlet for the 2600

Alex

Recommended Posts

Hi Alex,

Remember the poll on the Nexus some time ago? I think about 20 people claimed to own Gauntlet, so there shouldn't be any problem to get a scan

Anyway, I always thought the high number of Gauntlet owners was a bit suspicious. I've never seen a 2600 Gauntlet on any tradelist or auction in the 8 years I've been collecting videogames through the Internet. Personally, I only know less than a handful of people who own this elusive game.

Anyhow, enough talk, here's a picture .

Regards,

Marco

Edward Tang of Answer Software showed it to me at the 1983 Summer CES along with Confrontation and the PGP-1. I remember that Gauntlet didn't thrill me but Confrontation did!

Unfortunately the only thing I managered to get from Answer Software was Malagai.

From ABC To The VCS:

"Confrontation (Answer Software) is a very unique game which can only be played by two opposing players. In this unusual chess-like game, each player controls four pawns and a captain. The blue player's pawns are lined up vertically along the left border of the playfield while the red player's pawns are along the right. Blue's Captain is at the top center of the playfield and red's is at the bottom.

The object of the game is to move your four pawns to the opposite side of the board where they will be removed. Once all of your pawns are gone, you must get your captain over to your opponent's side of the board and remove it also. The first player to remove all of his pieces wins the game.

Moving the pieces is also an unusual process. Each player controls a bar which runs horizontally across the width of the playfield. You must place the bar over the piece that you wish to move. You must then press the red firing button once if you wish to move a pawn and twice if you want to move your captain. Once your piece is 'locked in' you can move it either horizontally or vertically. However your piece cannot move over a spot which is already occupied by another piece. Your Captain has the ability to move into a space occupied by one of your opponent's pawns. If this occurs, you will send his pawn back to its starting position.

While you move your pieces, you'll constantly use up your energy which is monitored at the top and bottom of the screen. When you are completely out of energy you'll be immobilized for three seconds, allowing your opponent to move pieces without any trouble. At the end of the three seconds, your energy will be completely recharged. Throughout the game a pod will move around the playfield with the letter 'E' flashing on and off. If you touch it while the letter appears you'll be receive a full supply of energy no matter how much you might have remaining."

As far as released US games go, not counting any minor label variations, all we need are:

Ultravision Karate

Pong Sports (Sears picture label)

Vidco Copy Cart

That's it, for the items we know about. Also a few homebrew titles like Dark Mage, Thrust, and Video Simon. After we get those three, I'll start asking for boxes, and of course there are many more boxes that we need.

Oh yeah, and an Atari Blackjack picture label. Reliable sources claim to have seen it, but I've been unable to verify it. The other three listed above I've actually seen, but I don't have scans, just digital photos that aren't very detailed.

Hehehe, no problem, check out your mailbox and this picture.

I'd make a scan of my Vidco Copy Cart if it weren't still shrinkwrapped

Did Gauntlet actually come with a box or manual?

I think it did, I vaguely remember a picture of the box somewhere. Also, if you look at the label (same type as Malagai) I would be surprised if they hadn't made a box and manual for it.

.. just in case: if anyone has the box and thinks boxes are a pain to collect, feel free to contact me

Regards,

Marco, who figured it was worth the shot - everybody here seems to be contacting Tempest for protos, it would be cool if everyone would be considering me as the box guru that people go to, to offer their cool boxes

Some of these games may not have boxes, our database doesn't yet differentiate those games, although that's something I'll be adding soon. Some of the Atari boxes that are listed above (such as Asteroids) are the red PAL versions, I didn't put that into the query. I might have to create some pages on AtariAge that show the items we're missing to make it easier for people to contribute.

For anyone who does send us boxes, please scan them in at 200dpi or better and then send us those original scans. You can compress them (lightly) with JPEG to cut down on the filesize.

Thanks !

AL, i ordered Crazy Valet from Brian Prescott i think January or early Febuary 2001. from him , i remember cause i missed some emails from him to finish the deal . i positive the limited to 99 carts that were made Dont have boxes. it was one of my concerns when i recieved it. so for the original 99 limited there was no box just a manual and the hand numbered cart

As I mentioned in my previous post, there are some titles in the above list that I know don't have boxes. Unfortunately I'm at work and can't spend too much time filtering the above list by hand, and our database doesn't have information (yet) on whether or not games actually *came* with boxes. So don't take the above list as gospel, since many of the homebrew games don't have boxes.

Sorry. Couldn't resist.

The reason Combat showed up is that we're missing the Gatefold (flap) box that shipped with the original Combat. Perhaps I should have taken the time to make a more complex query before posting it above. The best advice I can offer is to check the site before scanning any boxes, to make sure we don't already have it..

Not being able to own *every*thing is the beauty of collecting. If you could, it would take away the motivation to go on. At least for me. When I completed my Atari produced collection, I created a new challenge: finding all first releases (and let me assure you, some 1978, 83 and 86 releases are impossible to find boxed)

This is why I'm so glad there's an endless number of Atari 2600 games out there and hard- and software that's so rare, you will be dreaming of it for the rest of your life

Cheers,

Marco
