pirate carts

well i was wondering, i bought a few months ago 8 atari 2600 carts, wth the names : super burg, skydiver, fire bird, grandprix, river raid I, pitfall, lilly adventure, king arthur. these are all copies of original games grandprix=ind500, but there's no company name standing on the label only a title and a picture. are this pirated carts, are they rare, more worth then regular carts ??

thanks, TheleN

These are probably Taiwanese pirates. They're rare to some US collectors, but in Europe and Australia they're pretty common. Lots of collectors don't go into this kind of pirate games, they concentrate on the "real deal". For them, these carts have no value. Others collect everything they can get their hands on, but even for them the pirate carts from Taiwan don't hold much value. There are just too many of them available and not enough collectors that want them - simple economics.

Cheers,

that's marco explaining why he isn't really collecting those

actually, i think there's not enough of them, as the prices on ebay are rarely under 3-4$ for those....

and there's always new variations popping up ...

that makes it much more interesting than hunting for the ten last carts that you miss, i think. and it makes it much more cheaper. i guess that's a good argument that works for the majority here ...

I only collect these shitty things if they're boxed

My estimate: the ratio between pirates (including semi-official stuff like Quelle) and regular releases in Europe and Australia is 1-4. Meaning you will find one pirate on every four regulars. That's why pirates haven't dropped to the $1 or below mark, yet. But trust me, loose Quelle games will be worth near nada soon.

Now, that's where we agree! Fun? Yes! Valuable? Hell no!

WoooOOOooo. Marco's got a potty mouth! flushtoilet.gif

That seems to have struck a cord with you, Marco. Why don't you collect the loose ones? Is it because there are a zillion variations and it's almost impossible to know which ones were actually made?

it's the unique sets of 4-5-10 different carts you find for the same title that make the small difference. ...

hey where's the pot? i'd like some too

When I actively started collecting 2600 games I picked up everything I could get my hands on. 5-10 years ago it was pretty easy to find big batches of pirate games. I figured I would be able to find back again any cart I would trade or sell pretty easily. I decided to just keep the boxed ones.

It's not the fact that there are a zillion of these out there. Hey, my goal is to collect 2600 boxed 2600 games, so I guess I need a zillion possibilities

I quit collecting loose games because it just didn't feel much as a real challenge to collect them. Collecting boxed games just added that extra dimension.

And I stuck with the concept ever since. Well, as much as I can. Only exceptionsat this point are the ultra rare games and Brazilian games.

Cheers,

Marco

well i don't have a trade list, i'm just started collecting for 1 1/2 year, and i've about 70 different games. i've got some doubles but these are just some pac-man/asteroids etc carts. i've never get something from ebay or so. the only rare cart i have is x-man but it's pal (seems to be less rare). i'm from Hilversum, where are you guys from ?
