Atlantis II

BIG EARL

Recommended Posts

Hi, I am new to these boards and Atari games in general. I was looking throught the rarity guide and saw that Atlantis II is rated a 10. I was at a thrift store and saw an Atlantis II in a silver box. Is this the same Atlantis or is it a more common one. It might not have been for the 2600 I didnt pay that much attention. Any information would be great. Thanks!

Hmmm....interesting, but I have my doubts. As I recall, Atlantis II was the tougher, contest, competition-level game that was not commercially released, right? I think the ROM surfaced a bit back, but it wasn't ever in stores. Of course, that's just my opinion. I could be wrong.

The night scene, which is on the competetion was released in stores. The chances are very slim of it being Atlantis 2. I would buy it to check anyway. It's almost impossible to see until it's plugged in. Buyatari has one, he payed $400. It's not something you'll come across at a thrift shop to easy.

We wrote up a feature about Atlantis II a while back when we introduced the ROM image to the classic gaming public. We have scans of the contest flyer, the letters sent to contestants, the box and more. You can read about it here:

Atlantis II Discovered

The only difference on the box over the original Atlantis box is the fact that it has a white sticker on the front that says "Atlantis II". The cartridge has the same label as the original. However, if you power up the game you can spot the difference immediately, as the score uses a different font (pictures of the differences are on the above page).

Enjoy!

No, you would need to first open your sealed Atlantis box and then apply the sticker to it. The sticker is on the box itself, not on the shrinkwrap. I doubt that the Atlantis II boxes were sealed, since they had to open them up to stick a special version of the game cartridge inside. I don't remember how heavy the Atlantis II cartridge we had loaned to us was, but I presume it's just an EPROM inside.

Well, I didn't buy it and it was gone when I went back after seeing the rarity guide. It was in a Goodwill Store in Spanaway, Washington. It was a Silver Box and Atlantis II was printed on the box, not a sticker like the ones in the Rarity Guide. I didn't pay much attention to it, I didnit open it or anything. The only reason I remember it so well is because it was the only silver boxed game there. Since no one seems to have heard of this I will assume it was for another system and not the 2600. Thanks for all the replys. Wish I had bought it so I would at least know exactly what it was. Are there any other message boards I can put this on to see if anyone else has heard of this?

Well, after a lot of checking around I have found no one that ever heard of a Atlantis II in a silver box. Was Atlantis ever in a Silver box? If so I am guessing someone modified the box (added II) to make it appear to be Atlantis II. Still wish I had bought it so I would know for sure.

I got my Atlantis II a couple years ago, when I guess folks weren't scanning the ebay adds so well (It came with 20 other games for about $25). The guy mentioned in the ad that the auction included "Atlantis II, which was won in a some kind of contest". So I bought it just in case it really was something special (though I figured it wasn't). I just have the cartridge, and it looks just like a regular Atlantis game, except the user had etched a "II" into the label with a pen. I figured it was just his "second copy", that he had labeled accordingly. I would have sold it, but I tried it out and just happened to notice the different score font. I was glad to hear when AtariAge was able to confirm what it was, just wish I had the paperwork that came with it.

Sorry for the length - just happens to be my best "great find" story.

The original Atlantis (as well as the contest Atlantis II) did come in a silver box. Due to the nature of these boxes, they don't scan very well at all. The Atlantis II box is no different, except for the white sticker on the front. Was the box you saw in this same style?

I sometimes will buy an Atlantis night scene cart if it is $1 or less, I think of it as a lottery ticket. SO far, 4 lottery tickets, no hits On a semi-related note, when the "Atlantis II" originally surfaced here, wasn't there some belief that some of the day scene carts also had the Atlantis II rom? Or was that just a rumor? Or am I just inhaling too much glue?
