This raised a bit of discussion on that 10 best games list. So, let's settle this now: What do you think is the best home Double Dragon game? NES, Gensesis, 2600, 7800, Master System, Super NES, Game Boy, whatever. My votes: The 1st game: NES (awesome gameplay, somewhat different but awesome graphics, cool music), and Genesis (same as arcade graphics, awesome music). 2nd game: NES (not as good as 1st NES game, but fun). 3rd game: None, the 3rd game is crap on all the systems I've played, even the NES one ws pretty bad. So, cast your vote!

I've already made my view on the state of NES arcade ports clear in an earlier post and for those who do not know, I HATE the way 99.9% of NES arcade conversions ended up as entirely different games. Double Dragon, Strider, Bionic Commando,etc,etc,etc....why they felt they needed to add adventure elements to straightforward arcade games is beyond me. These games should have been left AS IS. But enough of my ranting. Here are the versions I felt were the best:

1.) Double Dragon 1 - Sega Master System (they kept the game as close to the arcade as they could and they even left the 2player mode in). The Genesis version is OK, but it's much faster and much harder than the arcade version.

2.) Double Dragon 2 - Mega Drive. The import of DD2 by Palsoft is pretty good in every respect. It didn't come out in the U.S., but I imported it and was very happy. I guess the only other version of DD2 would have to be the Amiga/Atari ST versions. The NES version was OK, but once again, the developers couldn't help themselves to changing the game drastically.

3.) Double Dragon III: This game sucks on any platform. How this game ever made it out of the testing stages is beyond me. The NES version is too hard. The arcade version is surprisingly sloppy with terrible graphics. Not worth it!

Okay, I've gotta say something about NES DDII. It's a great game, no doubt, but it doesn't have that street fighting feel, like the first one did. Sure, at first it does, but what's with that underwater base? Basically everything that comes after that level doesn't have the feel either. And the ending, about the angel returning Marion to life, no. Just no. The first game was somewhat believable, with it's streets, suburbs etc. And sure, some evil group could convert a mountain into a hideout, but I just didn't buy anything in DDII. I like it and all, but the fantasy-ish feel is one of the reasons I still feel the original is best (for any system). DDIII is pretty bad when using the fantasy elements, too. Cleopatra, c'mon! DDIII also suffers from too small figters. You can't see what you're doing from a distance! DDIII rivals 2600 DD for small characters. When I play a fighting game, I want pure street fighting with characters I can see. the original DD delivers. I grew up with the original, so of course I feel that one's the best, I'm not trying to put the others down, just being realistic (not that I look for realism a lot when playing games, but it helps).

I was only kidding about the Tiger handheld

The Gameboy version was great tho.

It came pretty early in the GB's life. Before it all you could expect, sound wise, were bleeps and mario noises, then DD - and girls screaming cause you whipped em!!

It looked great, showed up well on the green on green screen - a great conversion, if not arcade accurate, it really made good use of the hardware.

I wasn't complaining, it was a pretty good port !

Seriously, though, I think the Genesis got the best port. I also like that version because I beat the thing on a real console in 20-30 min., seriously. Man, that was one of my best finds at the local Funco.

Oh, and I forgot to further explain my interest in DDII for GB. It was my first hand-held DD, and it's just plain weird. It has nothing to do with any other version of DDII, who are The Scorpions? I don't remember seeing them in any other version of any DD. The enemies are also stupid, and the gameplay is repetitive. But, the music is pretty good, even though it gets annoying after awhile.

Not trying to crowd the topic (but I always end up doing it anyways), but to be honest, I don't think any other version or any sequel can compare to the orignal, and I think the NES and Genesis versions are best. So, to sum it up, The orignal Double Dragon for the NES and Sega Genesis are my top favorites.
