Best print mag for Atari coverage?

Recommended Posts

While I've seen a few Atari-related articles in modern game magazines now and then, there are none that I'm aware of that make any attempts whatsoever to cover these systems on a regular basis.

I think the now defunct NextGen magazine probably did the best job, as they devoted their "Retroview" page (usually one of the last pages) to games in the past, even creating mock NextGen covers that "could have been". The last issue ever (January, 2002), which I'm holding in my hands, went back to January 1988. Unfortunately there's no mention of Atari in that "Retroview". Guess Atari wasn't really doing anything too exciting in the videogame world at that time. Isn't that about when the 2600 Junior came out?

Theres nothing in the UK. Even magazines like the Edge that make out they know something about gaming (which is a fatuous lie) can only think back as far as the SNES or, with a following wind, the C64.

I think it's more to do with the age of games journalists. We play host to the oldest games magazine in the world 'Computer and Video Games' (though it only beat US by a few months). They did a 'retrospective' of gaming recently, and it was painfully obvious that no-one currently on the staff had really played anything before 1989. Sad.

The only hope we have is a TV show called 'Thumb Bandits', the girl presenter did name the VCS as her all time favourite console.

Yes, I've seen several of these "100 Best Games of All Time!" and classic video games are lucky to even get a sidebar. Every time I see one of these lists (which is almost every month for some publications) it seems the majority of games were released less than three years ago. It sometimes makes me wonder how long many of these "journalists" have been in the industry and if they've even played anything prior to the Super Nintendo or the advent of the Pentium.

So, Edge magazine is still in publication? That's interesting, considering NextGen just went under.

Speaking of 2600 mags. That's one thing I'd LOVE to see here on Atari Age... is SCANS OF OLD MAGAZINES (Joystik, Blip, Electronic Games, etc) that had reviews, ads, hype, writeups, rumors, etc. of the 2600 games when they were the "latest and greatest".

It really gives you a new perspective reading them in that light that you don't get today reading articles written only recently (like on the regular websites).

We do alread have complete scans of some magazine runs, but we haven't had time to put them online yet. They are in the queue, though. They also take up a considerable amount of disk space on the server, not to mention bandwidth when people start downloading them. Although neither of those issues are stopping us, it's just a matter of time and priorities. It'll happen.
