PS3 linux anyone?

Weren't we talking about dead-weight Bluray drives making for expensive Linux machines?

No, we were talking about having fun with Linux on the PS3. :P

I thought we were to, but you know every topic has to turn into the same thing around here.

Anyhow - if you're looking to buy the PS3 to function solely as a linux machine, well you're obviously better served elsewhere. The PS3 wasn't made to be a retail shelf linux box, but rather a game machine I believe.

But the fact that it is this open, and can effectively run alternate OS'es is a very cool thing, and is quite a nice value add. ;)

PS3 doesn't have enough memory to compete with an equivalent cost pc system (blu-ray excluded). Does one really need blu-ray to use linux? The price of a blu-ray pc will drop far quicker than the PS3, that's for sure.

I consider it more of an added value.

I think it is pretty cool that it is a more directly supported feature, rather than something shoehorned in and in a gray area, like on the Xbox.

Sounds like there is no unexpected trickery going on to get a PS3 to run Linux.

Now, on the other hand, I wonder if they've opened it up like this as a measure to defeat other things, for example, the ability to burn copyright discs.

And, I'm not sure how I feel about running an X11 version of an emulator on my PS3. I think I'd rather have custom compiled emulators like on the Xbox.

It seems like a pretty cool move, though, and goes a ways towards justifying the cost. It isn't *just* a console... it is an open source PC, too. Although, one that appears limited to Linux, not my favorite platform.

Current theory has it that the more likely you can run linux easily on a machine, the less likely someone will hack into it.

Seems tied in with this strange desire by linux fanboi's to have linux running on everything, including your toaster.

No offense intended to linux fans.

In related news, it has been announced that Debian stable has been successfully ported to the Swedish Erotica Personal Pleasure Massager with "Jackrabbit" clitoral attachment. Please note that apt-get has been renamed to ass-grab on this release. e.g.:

ass-grab -update -install

:D

That looks more like an open BSD quote. Regardless however it still seems like a waste of time to install a Linux OS onto the PS3 due to the high costs of the system and the technology on it, the blue-ray is pretty much the only thing.

You're probably thinking of NetBSD. There was a bit of rivalry with Linux for a while, while both groups fought for a superior number of platforms. The joke was that whoever got their OS running on a Furby first would win. :P

Wasn't it FreeBSD?

Whatever it was, I had a BSD fanboi on my Citadel-UX Internet BBS for awhile... before I banned him. After he was gone, things were so boring, I ended up shutting the board down.

Who ever said Trolls didn't have a purpose, never saw my BBS.

*sigh*

From NetBSD:

One of the primary focuses of the NetBSD project has been to make the base OS extremely portable. This has resulted in NetBSD being ported to a large number of hardware platforms.

Here's the list: http://www.netbsd.org/Ports/

Okay, time for a primer on BSD everyone! *clap* *clap* Listen up!

FreeBSD: General Purpose Server/Workstation

OpenBSD: High Security Server

NetBSD: Highly Portable Unix OS

Dragonfly BSD: A modernized fork of FreeBSD focused on Multi-CPU and microkernel architecture.

Darwin: Take one part Mach and one part FreeBSD. Combine to make a core OS upon which you can build a fruity company with a "lickable" interface.

We all clear now? Yes? No? Maybe? ... Hello? Anyone? Anybody there? Anyone at all?

Ah, screw it. :P

Wow, posts like this are okay but a link I posted to Britney's intentional upskirt is not.

Sorry about the open BSD thing, I wasn't thinking straight. :)

What?? :?

The cost of the PS3 compared to a desktop system of equal processing, memory, ect is so much higher it isn't worth it for that purpose. Even with the blue-ray drive (although cheaper than going the route of buying a stand alone player) doesn't make up for the fact unless you could burn too. The only way this is remotely worth the time and effort is if you have a dual boot system setup to switch between Linux and the PS3 platform, at which personally still isn't worth it to me. Now something that could be interesting and nice to my flavor of things is remote access to the PS3 and streaming the systems video and allowing a universal controller tap into the gameplay.

So how is the sound in your compile of mame. Is it all crappy and scratchy? Or is it fine?

Have you considered compiling advancemame? I hear it has some menu program that makes using it easier.

Sound is just fine :D

I plan on trying to compile more stuff when I get some more time to mess around with it ;)

Mine was witty, good natured, and amusing.

Yours was just a link to porn. *shrug*

(Not that there is anything WRONG with porn, although, I must admit, even Paris seemed to know that Britney should keep her legs shut in this case).

Yeah I realized how ridiculous my request was being that MAME tends to be rather large. But considering how few emulators seem to be compiled for ppc I figured I might as well get used to it. I probably picked a lousy one to try first though in MAME.

Thanks for the makefile. Interesting. It does not look much different from what I did yet I was getting compile fails when it hit the x11 stuff (I think).

It takes a while to compile. I'll try it and let you know the results.

It falled with an error 'xvimage' undeclared while compiling xv.c.

Is this part of the X11 stuff? I'm using the yellow dog distribution and I just assumed that the graphic interface was X11. Or am I missing something?

I've gotten pre-compiled mames to work but the sound is all messed up in them.

Maybe I just need to switch to fedora...

I'm trying svga lib and it does not seem to be getting a bunch of errors. Seems kind of odd when precompiled mame's were working fine. Do I need something on my machine to get X11 to work?

Hmmm svga failed as well....

I think I'm gonna scream..

You're probably missing development code and headers. I can tell you that MAME is a very bad first choice when you're in the 'lets see if I can get something to compile on this new platform' kick, it's rather massive and complicated. :P

Well I finally got it and am in MAME bliss. I had to get the SDL development library and then I compiled it under SDL. That did the trick for now.

Here is a screenshot. :D

Now the next question is how do I get it to use the PS3 pad?
