#3798554 1 Monster Truck Vs. 61 Children (2600)

Posted by Funkyspectrum on Tue Jul 4, 2017 9:36 AM

Hello, all!

A few months back, I started working on my first Atari 2600 homebrew. It was quite a learning experience, and quite a challenge. I actually haven't touched my game in a few months now, but it has been sitting more or less complete for a while.

The game is a re-make of a PC game I had made years ago in Game Maker. This game can be found on IndieDB. Given the patriotic undertones of this game, I figure it might be cool to release the Atari 2600 version on Tuesday (July 4th) on IndieDB. However, before I go ahead with that, I wanted to get the opinions of you all at AtariAge!

I have uploaded my code if anyone wants to compile it themselves. (The two .txt files should just be .dat)

I'd be very interested to hear any feedback or suggestions for this game. I'd like to make the children a little more distinguished, but I'm not sure I can realistically do that with the hardware. I definitely look forward to writing more for the Atari 2600 as it's very fun! Let me know what you think!

Hello mate ! WOW ! What a game ! I simply had to do a review of this and the original. You've really done something amazing here mate it's so addictive i cannot stop playing it and i urge others to do the same. 10/10 !

#3599318 Sinclair ZX Spectrum Vega

Posted by Funkyspectrum on Thu Sep 22, 2016 3:58 AM

in a way you are correct, mate, BUT i would say that while the CC was an absolute disaster of biblical proportions, the vega+ is a far, far more toxic product, whether or not it actually gets released. Their "social networking" mouthpiece is one of the most disliked people in retro gaming and the people now left at the company have a history of massive legal/financial problems in everything they've been involved with (i've touched on this a little in my videos but it's really a very deep pit to get into). The fact that they employed someone to represent them who is known to be one of the most toxic members of the community and is a bully, a known liar and a twit shows how little they know about the scene and how little regard they have for anyone in it. Basically these people are not deluded like the creator of the CC was, these people are deliberately lying to members of the community to continue to get money from them despite no product showing up. In all honesty, what they've done so far could have been done in one week by anyone who knows what they're doing. They have provided next to ZERO updates throughout the campaign, presumably they're au fait with the CC campaign and didn't want to play their deck of lies too soon. I was told, categorically, that everything was on track, the device would be out (by now) and the detractors would be left with egg on their faces. It seems that the only people with egg on their faces here are the creators themselves. Furthermore, they've not paid either the original production factory OR the concept artist, now saying their design will be "true to the design featured during the fundraiser" (basically a not so smart way of saying "it's not the actual design, though, because he is thoroughly pissed off with us").

The people behind the campaign have also been in touch with 3 different police forces in the UK to report anyone saying negative things about the campaign. I was, again, told about this by THE MOUTHPIECE at the company who said "it's a jailable offence" (lol). There are many people on twitter railing against the campaign, myself included, and telling the actual truth about what's going on. This has led to a number of people requesting refunds which has in turn made RCL furious and they're looking to lash out at anyone saying anything detrimental (true) about the debacle that they're behind.

This is a far, far nastier happening than the CC, which was basically laughable. These people have almost 1/2 a million of other peoples money, some of which seems to have flat out disappeared, and have done a weeks work in almost a year, constantly lying all the time as they've done so. There was meant to be a video of the "final device" working uploaded a week or more ago. No video has been shown. Their "updates" (scant as they are) involve saying they're going to do something "in a few days" then, well, not doing it. They seem to presume that people are so stupid as to not actually bother requesting further information (that they've been promised) and that yet another smokescreen will be completely appropriate.

The sad thing is, they have the money.

These people are really dragging the name of the ZX Spectrum through the muck. Certain people are only involved because their reputation is so tarnished in the spectrum community that this is almost some kind of dig/strike against their detractors "look at me, i'm involved in this ! i AM important ! you MUST listen to my bullshit (again)" and the rest of the folks behind it have been involved in far more nefarious things in the past, collapsing several businesses due to massive financial skulduggery.

The CC was one mans idiotic dream that went wrong and fell apart due to hilarious lies.

The VEGA+ is a wilfully toxic project that is mocking the community and the backers. Even if the device DOES get made, it's going to be garbage. Funding these people is a bad thing to do, regardless of the product.

Also, they are hiding behind the name of Clive Sinclair, who is merely a small shareholder in the company and has NOTHING to do with the product. They keep billing it like he has but Clive had a bad fall at the start of this year and has been convalescing since then, far from the world of technology with his wife (who also drew her shares/investment out of a sister company owned by one of the RCL bosses in the first quarter of this year which is also covered in one of my videos)

I am at the moment doing a playthrough of THE REALM OF NO (an atari adventure game) in which the viewers choose the outcome, go over to my channel and have a look at those videos ! I've also reviewed a few atari 2600 games since the HALO review, too. It's all on my channel ! Enjoy !

i went through the same situation and got no reply from the harmony site email or on this forum. however, when i ordered the cart it arrived in about 5 days (and that's from USA to Spain). You don't have any worries buying from them.

Posted by Funkyspectrum on Mon Aug 8, 2016 6:20 AM

here is the game that is loosely based on the Andrei Tarkovsky film of the same name and what a great game it is it really pushes the 2600 to its limits i would say ! another (reasonably) unsung gem in my book !

#3566043 Here's my latest review - TURMOIL !

Posted by Funkyspectrum on Fri Aug 5, 2016 10:30 AM

Your reply doesn't seem to make any sense. You can keep embedding disabled for your videos and provide a plain link like I did in my post. Then people will know at a glance that they have to go to YouTube. When you embed a blocked video, you're giving people extra work for no reason and some will say "go F yourself for wasting my time" under their breath and they won't even bother to click the second time.

Clicking twice isn't tough stuff, but you are the one who is asking people to do you favor, so it's up to you to make it as quick and easy as possible.

I was just giving you a quick tip. I wasn't looking for an argument, especially when I don't care about old game reviews. I like gameplay footage with no talking or music.

i'm not arguing, mate ! don't get me wrong. i will try what you suggested i just presumed that if embedding was disabled i wouldn't be able to do the plain link business i will try next time thanks mate !

#3565553 Here's my latest review - TURMOIL !

"lying in the park, drinking mess all day"...   :rolling:

sorry mate i maybe didn't make that too clear, i was looking at this quote for a while until i understood it, i actually said "meths" which is maybe not something people call the liquid outside the uk. it's methylated spirit which you can use to light candles and start fires etc a purple and noxious smelling liquid but tramps drink it sometimes as the alcohol content is quite high but i think it makes them very ill !

#3565270 Here's my latest review - TURMOIL !

Posted by Funkyspectrum on Thu Aug 4, 2016 6:24 AM

hello, folks. i've taken some of the criticism of my past atari 2600 videos to heart and have tried to not get so off track in this review and have actually talked about some of the aspects of the game although i do go off on some tangents at times ! let me know what you all think and let me know what you think of the great game that is turmoil !

#3565269 Why do YOU collect Atari 2600 games?

Posted by Funkyspectrum on Thu Aug 4, 2016 6:22 AM

I really loved the system from the start, it was the first gaming system i saw in the flesh but my parents couldn't afford to get me one so me and my friend would play it round at his house as he had one. He didn't have many games but we'd play them over and over, especially combat. i still think a lot of the games, despite the primitive graphics, are really playable. for me, playability isn't about how flashy the graphics are. i like systems from all eras but i do go back to the 2600 a lot and i still pick up titles for it from time to time, as and when i can afford to, despite having a harmony cart, too !

i really like the artwork on a lot of the carts, too, it really gives a fantastical glimpse into the realms you could imagine whilst playing the games as a little bit of imagination made the games much deeper too. i like how it wasn't "all laid on" in those days and you have to make your mind work for entertainment, too ! The cartridges still hold an allure for me and i'm always on the look out for them. sadly i live in spain now where the system doesn't seem to have been big at all. i have never seen a single one or game at thrift stores, which is a shame, so i do most of my buying online but i really love when i find an undiscovered treasure trove of games to buy for a reasonable price !

speaking of price, i think that's part of the thing, too. although some rare carts are expensive most games can be had reasonably inexpensively and that for me is a great part of collecting the games, too. i love the nes as a console, too, but the games on that are just a silly price these days. i suppose it was one of the first consoles that had "real" sprites etc so the games have a certain look. the 2600 looks very primitive, graphically, in comparison so i think the 16 year old collectors these days don't bother with it. this is a good thing ! i'm sure there must be a few younger collectors out there, though, but they definitely missed out on one of the greatest and most imaginative periods in gaming, i'd say !

#3557079 My first 2600 review - HALO

Posted by Funkyspectrum on Fri Jul 22, 2016 2:16 PM

my stuff is the youtube equivalent of marmite. if you find angry joe funny or think pat contri is hands down hilarious you're probably not going to find much entertainment in what i do ;-)

for people with a more abstract and hard working sense of humour i like to think there's something worthwhile ! i don't script anything and just put in the game and do the commentaries live with no plan whatsoever i find it most enjoyable to make my videos that way ! some like them, some don't, you can't please everyone !

#3557076 My first 2600 review - HALO

Bloody hell you guys are lazy. Just click the YT link!

@FunkySpectrum: Your commentary was bloody priceless. I was rolling with that bit about the Queen's throne and poetry recitals! :rolling:

Halo 2600 is a fun game. My best friend is a Halo fan and thought I was an idiot for buying it though. Never finished it due to the three lives not being enough later on when the enemies start dogpiling on you.

thanks a lot mate i am glad someone enjoyed it and, yes, i did think people complaining about having to make the oh so tiresome 1/2 a second jaunt over to youtube to watch it was a bit strange :-/

Plenty more reviews coming, including another couple of 2600 reviews next week ! There'll be at least 1 review a day for the next week (from lots of different formats)
